Arthritis medication

Vet talked about other options to the Previcox. Namely.....
Onsior
Amantadine
Tramadol
Gabapentin
Cartrophen injections.

I think a few dogs have benefited from the Cartrophen @David Lady I remember for sure. Given I don't have insurance for Lilly, I'm guessing this may be the most expensive option, and although a consideration if definitely doesn't exclude it.

Sorry for the delay - just getting caught up. We had Lady on a combination of Gabapentin and tramadol at the end but this was more focused on her lower spine than her arthritis. The latter was bad in her hips and also she had it in her elbows, but the pain killers were really for the back problem. We knocked off the gabapentin towards the end in favour of having a dog that was actually compos mentis rather than one that was so spaced out she just wasn't with us any more.

We tried Cartrophen from about 8 years old when arthritis was just starting to show up as a problem and it did have some success for a couple of years. The vet said it wasn't clear how it worked and it didn't seem to work for all dogs but it would be worth giving it a try. Lady showed marked improvement after the first 4 week course that then lasted a year when we repeated it. The second year was good too but to be honest not such a marked improvement. The third year it did nothing and by then she was on long term metacam and then changed to gabapentin and later Tramadol but that was because her back problems were becoming marked.

It was her back that finished her off - not the elbows and hips. She lost the use of her back legs.

I do hope you find a combo that helps.

Thanks @David (had been wondering how you were).
Lilly has had a week of the full dose of Previcox and today we have stopped it as it is making her nauseous and frankly vomit.
Going to chat to the vet later I think, with a view to the Cartrophen.
Not sure what to do as a prn medication. Had been thinking trialling gabapentin, but not at all sure now. Might be in the Tramadol category for Lilly (as in doesn't seem to help the pain but makes her flat).

I really like paracetamol, because is so readily available I think we forget what a good drug it can be. I used it on my dogs with vet approval and it's really helped. Moo used it and so does Rory as we didn't have any other options for them. It's very effective.

Previcox and all other NSAID made Rourke vomit and vomit blood. Specialist vet did suggest Paracetamol which I haven't given him just in case it causes bleeding, probably wouldn't but I am being cautious. Have you tried CBD oil, that was advised by a young retired vet who used it on her Flatcoat who had cancer and she said it helped with the pain, the 5mg prednisolone every other day seems to help enormously and Rourke isn't drugged up.

Lilly is a lot better this week.
Got her appetite back, more her normal self and seems to still be up for moderate walks with no more limping than before.

We have the cartrophen but not made the first appointment yet what with Lilly not being well, bank holidays etc.

We stopped her Vit B6 capsule we were continuing for her lupus, I wonder if that was contributing to some nausea as she would often spit it out or leave it. Bit we have upgraded her Youmove Dog to Youmove plus and she has been having this for the last 5 days.

On the topic of steroids, Lilly lost loads if weight on prednisolone, and muscle, so not sure it is for us in the longer term, and worked hard to get her off the medroxyprednisolone which wasn't helping her in my opinion.

We have been given Co-codamol as a prn med, not tried it yet. Is of course hugely more expensive than the human OTC stuff. Plan to discuss this with the vet in due course, but will see if it is helpful.

The CBD oil is also yet to be explored but still on my radar!

Rourke is on a very low dose of prednisolone 5mg every other day and no sign of muscle wastage or loss of weight. Vet prescribed 10mgs which was far to much and gave him some side effects. I forgot to say he is also on the equivalent of Yumove Extra which can only be got from vet.

For those of you who have used CARTROPHEN, did you notice any thickening of fur?
Not convinced her joints are any better but her fur has become very thick.....and fluffy.....
Coincidence?

Hmm, now you've mentioned it, Monty moults a lot less now from his pantaloons and there are fewer fluffy bits - he hasn't had a cartrophen injection in over a year so maybe it did produce a bit more of a downy undercoat?

Not really, Jac, no.

Harv has always had quite thick fur around his neck (like a mane!) and pretty thin elsewhere - and that hasn't changed.

How long have you been using it? The impact seems to vary in how long it takes (although with Harv it was, I recall, pretty rapid).

Where is the thickening of fur @Jacqui-S? Is it in any particular spot, or generally her fur has changed texture?
