Barking in his crate.

What happens if you leave him out of his crate? Would a pen set-up work in that space (I.e. a flexible set of panels like these Puppy pen that you could fit round the crate) which would give him more options and space outside the crate if he needs it?
I can imagine how stressful this is for you, worrying about the neighbours being disturbed as well as the lack of sleep. It must be really hard (we’re still going through some of this so I sympathise massively).
We had a pen around his small crate (crate now too small for him) when he was in the pen part he tried to get out of the pen. So we put up the bigger crate.

Have you thought of a crate in your bedroom? When I had puppies I initially had them in a cardboard box beside my bed and they soon learned to be independent and stay downstairs.

I remember my first GSP way back in 1984, she howled for ages at night (before I thought of the cardboard box), but eventually stopped. Apparently the owners of her brother, after two weeks of howling, gave him some red wine and all was peaceful! I am not advocating that though!
He tries to drink Hubby’s red wine, Homer liked the taste of beer.

I wonder if a taller pen + his big crate might be helpful. We did this with Stilton (+ huge value building and reinforcement) and it made a real difference to how he relaxed during the day.

We did have a large pen for Odin but we put it away as he was jumping against is and almost fell down...He is in his crate at night from 10pm until 7am. Without whining/barking....I am very gratefull for that!

Have you tried giving him his food early after letting him out? Perhaps he will sleep with a full belly...

Now Odin gets other food he is not that hungry anymore and he is much more relaxed. We give him a lot of food, as the vet told us to do. He has a grow spurt So growing very fast and need a lot..

I’ve been putting him in his crate for various times now and then while I’ve been upstairs and after 5-10 mins of fuss he’s settled down. So he’s getting better at being left alone.
It’s the early morning fuss I need to get sorted out now.
It could be that he’s hungry and having a growth spurt.

Have you got a cover over the crate to make it like a den? It may help to leave a radio on too. I hope you can find something to help him settle for a bit longer.

Maybe a bit of supper at bed time? That worked for one of mine. 🐾🙂

Is it the act of you leaving the room that is worrying him? If you left food ie a Kong, or hide food does he eat this when you are out?

He eats his Kong and as soon as it’s finished, or he’s had enough, he will start barking.
During the day he will settle better but at night/early morning he keeps going.
We’ve had some better nights this week and he’s better when Hubby goes down to let him out.
Last night wasn’t great but he’s having some soft poop issues so needed to go out three times. I ended up with him on the sofa then when he was sleepy I put him back in his crate.
I think it could be a hunger thing, hopefully I can get his tummy sorted out.

How many times a day do you give him food? I was told to give him his kibble 4 times a day....I changed it to 3times a day with the though that he would drink less....But no, So now he gets his amount of kibble spread over 4 times a day

He’s going to the vet for his tummy on Monday, collecting poop samples this weekend. He's very farty 🤢
He gets four meals a day, three meals when he is at his dog walker.
I’ve decided to sleep on the sofa with him after waking up while his tummy is still not right then there’s no reason for him not to sleep through I’ll try again with him in his crate.

Flicka went through a bad tummy for weeks and I also slept on the sofa and eventually it stopped her crying/barking. The one thing which finally stopped the very soft and copious poos was Hills Gastrointestinal Biome, which we just did for a short time, I still have a bag left 'just in case' in the future.

Had another bad night with him. The only way I could keep him quiet was to take the sofa cushions and sit next to his crate entrance with the crate door open and the cover lifted so he could see me. He wanted to snuggle up with me but I was firm and regularly had to tell him and put him back to bed.

He goes to bed quite happily and will go to his crate during the day. He even went back to his crate this morning when Hubby went downstairs and I managed an hour of sleep in my own bed.

His poops are still squishy and he needed to poop at 12:30am. Once he’s awake during the night he just won’t settle again.

Vet has put him on Pro Kolin and Panacur but poops still not much better.
