Bear's Puppy Log

Nb. I'm in contact with the breeder and all the litters' families. One of the owners hasn't let their puppy off lead yet, he's on a long retractable lead constantly, because he's a bit jumpy / flighty around birds ( they live by the sea, lots of seagulls).

Bear has been off lead every day, from 11 weeks, they are 17 weeks today, two extremes, it seems, I'm hoping we have done the right thing and it doesn't backfire on us.

Gosh! Totally the right thing! Of course it's gonna backfire on you....that's a given mind with young bonkers labby lads! :giggl::rofl:

I've been thinking.... when are they actually going to let him off? And how might that pan out? I'm generally pleased so far with how we are building up Bear's whistle recall, it's not perfect, of course, but is coming on well. Can't quite imagine training recall while constantly on a lead.
Anyhoo, no doubt Bear's recall will disappear any day now, and there's a few things we are rubbish at anyway, so I'm in no position to judge. I find it interesting to see how all the pups are progressing at different rates depending on what the owner is concentrating on.

You've done the right thing.

Noooo! I just couldn't cope! He's Bear now!๐Ÿ˜ญ:rofl:
It's probably a moot point. Bear comes to Monty, Monty comes to Bear. I might as well just call them both Moobear.

As demonstrated yesterday, as long as it's delivered in the right pitch, they also respond to orange squash, cookery books and tomatoes. And Bear must also know his nickname is ****head by now (substitute any four letter variation there )as he gets called it almost hourly ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

Yes! I let Joy off lead from her being teeny tiny and her recall has always been good. She had the best recall at Puppy School (4.3 seconds from calling her to lead clipped on. Not that I was extraordinarily over proud or anything!) The instinct to come back to 'Mother ' is just so strong I think when they're very small, it's the best time to make the most of it. Worked with my GoodGirl anyway.

Bear looks like Montyโ€™s little shadow! Itโ€™s much better to start them off lead when theyโ€™re young and first allowed out. Having a steady older dog too is a bonus, as the puppy is usually keen to be one of the โ€˜packโ€™ and stays close. I would be worried about keeping a puppy on lead for so long.

We didn't start properly on Otter's recall for months, mainly because from 4 months old to around 10 months she was on such restricted activity, plus during that time she developed a huge anxiety around the car. Despite that, I reckon she has the best recall out of the lot of them!

Squidge's recall is by far the worst out of my lot. The reason being that I paid in SO much for her staying close that I so rarely need it. She's always right by my side, looking up at me with her happy little face. But it means when she smells something disgusting, I have no chance of getting her back, really. I should work on it, I know, but it's such a rare occurrence, I struggle to find the enthusiasm :D
