I went out after dark last night to try to get some nice nighttime lake shots. I chose a different lake this evening, one I’ve not been to for years. In my mind, the parking was right slap bang next to the lake. Not so. It was about a twenty minute walk through very dark, very dense forest. The saving grace was a good wide footpath, but my head torch was all but useless.

I got to the lake and started sketching (taking test shots). Side note: this isn’t easy with a water-obsessed Labrador. About five minutes in, I heard a noise in the woods to the side of me. It kept getting louder but my torch wouldn’t reach any distance at all to show me what it was. I tried to ignore it, and kept snapping away. Willow didn’t seem bothered, so that’s ok, I thought. Probably just rabbits.
Time ticked by, and there was a niggle in the back of my mind. That ain’t no rabbit. Louder and bigger sounding, or was it just my mind playing tricks on me? Willow suddenly snaps to attention, staring across the end of the lake where I was sat. Then barking and snarling and ... bugger this, I’m outta here!!!

I had planned to be by the lake for two to three hours. Think I managed about fifteen minutes before I was scared off! I’m so soft

I will go back when I know the sky will play ball and I have a hefty torch that lights further than five feet in front of me!

It’s a lovely spot with great potential, but only if I know what and where the beasties are!

OMFG Fiona, what were you thinking? As a city girl, and coming from the land where most beasties can kill you....I say it's not worth it!

It was probably wild boar, which are dangerous but generally shy. But this isn’t a million miles from where a woman was attacked by a wolf a few months back.

Yeesh! I would have been terrified too...would NEVER go out at night in the woods here.

I do very early in the morning sometimes 4 or 5am. I wouldn't go at night there's too much dogging going on. There's nothing nasty here I've run into badger fox etc but we just go another way. I'm often out in the dark I like it I find it peaceful

The bears in California will generally stay away if they hear big dogs in an area, hopefully it's the same way in Andorra!

(Little dogs don't have the same effect for obvious reasons )

Yikes! That looks like a grizzly...did they say what kind of bear? The smaller black bears here are less aggressive than the grizzlies but I would not want to meet any of them in the woods, thank you!!

We don't have grizzlies. It will be a brown bear. The Pyrenean bear is effectively extinct, so they introduced some Slovakian brown bears several years ago, and they're thriving apparently!

Boa constrictor captured beside River Thames at Barnes

The 5ft snake, thought to have been abandoned, was spotted near Barnes Bridge in south-west London.

This snake was found right near where we live on the path we often walk along.
