Hi,

As I approach the time where thoughts are turning to retirement (don't let my youthful good looks deceive you!), or at least working less hours, I've been thinking about what things might occupy my time. One of the things that I'm thinking about is writing a blog - primarily about Harv but other things too like VBA for Excel, retirement finances, internet poker, PS4 gaming, and, well, anything that takes my fancy really.

For those of you that have your own blogs:
What hosting and blogging software options did you go with? (A combination of Bluehost and Wordpress seems the most popular)
Any 'must have' plug-ins and / or themes?
Have you 'monetized' (that was a new term for me!) your site with ads, referrals etc to offset the costs? Or just treated the costs as the costs of a hobby, like golf club membership fees or sports kit and equipment etc etc
Any tips for a beginner?
Links to your blogs, please, if you don't mind.

For those of you that visit blogs:
What draws you to them?
What do you really love about them?
And, what do you really hate about them (if anything)? Or what stops you from visiting other blogs?

All opinions welcomed :)

As for what I want: good, solid advice that is different to what I can get everywhere else. That backs its advice up with good data.
For computing stuff, I want clear solutions to issues that aren’t on every other blog. There is no point reinventing the wheel. If someone else has given a solution to the problem you are trying to resolve, and that comes your in the first page of Google searches, then unless you’re bringing something else to the party, don’t bother. In tech, I find there is a massive amount of redundancy in tech blogs.

My last job was at a Canadian bank and my work PC auto-corrected everything to 'z'. Drove me nuts!
This site (at least for me) corrects everything to UK spelling. I've learned to just go with it and hope people don't think I'm trying to be faux-posh by writing colour instead of color. :sneaky:

I'm not much of a blog reader unless someone points me the way of a specific one. Even the ones I like I forget to visit and the auto-notify that I sign up for never seems to work. Maybe that's a Mac thing? I think the toughest thing about a blog is that there is so much competition out there and simply getting new content up on a regular basis - ideally daily is key to building readership. However if you're just going for something that will make you happy, I'd say write what you want, when you want and have fun!

I'm not a blog fan either. The only ones I really come across are food blogs when looking for recipe ideas and the thing that really annoys me about them is having to scroll through oodles of photos and "blog" to get to the information I'm looking for near the bottom of the page!

A quick request, if I may.

There is no content yet but I'd like to see whether people are able to access my blog site without any issues - its Home - Richie's Room

The reason I ask is that although I can see it on our iPads I couldn't see it on my work PC (but that could be due to anti-virus / firewall techie stuff!) and I just want to make sure it is 'up and running' even if I haven't posted anything yet :computerrage:

Fine on my 'phone too! Have never followed a blog before but will be interested to have a look at yours. A friend has suggested I should start one, but I'm not at all sure if that's for me.
