Can Nas de Gos, Girona

Just back from a week staying here, Can Nas de Gos (which translates as "Dog nose house"!). I can't recommend it highly enough, if you're looking for somewhere wonderful for a peaceful dog walking holiday. The house is small, but larger than I thought it would be from the pictures. There is a good sized double bedroom, a smaller (but still perfectly serviceable) twin room and a third room which would be a good size for a single bed and might fit a second at a push. To be honest, I think the house would be rather tight for six people, but fine for four.

The owners live in their house a short distance away, but the houses are private from one another. It is right in the middle of a tall pine forest, but still receives a lot of light in the garden and by the raised pool (although we're not pool people ourselves).

The house itself is quite dark inside because of the location, so at this time of year was quite cool in the evenings, but the large open fire had it warmed up in no time.

From the house, there were several routes you could set out to walk, and there were countless others just a short drive in any direction. Some in the foothills of the Pyrenees, some across the wide open fields of grain, some along the river. It is perfect dog walking country, and with so many walks and being early in the year, we rarely saw another person - just how we like it!

The owners, Terry (English) and Gloria (Spanish) are just delightful! They have owned their house there for 53 years! They are friendly as can be, happy to stop and chat but won't disturb you unless approached. Gloria said she would make us a traditional tortilla, but was sadly ill for much of the week, so didn't manage. However, she promised that WHEN we go back (not "if"! :D ) she will make us one.

The village of Crespià is in walking distance (about 2km) and is very small, but has a bar/cafe. We didn't visit, because of the dogs! Then, another couple of km down the road is Esponellà, where there is a restaurant owned by the parents of the renowned Roca brothers (of El Celler de Can Roca fame - which has been ranked as the top restaurant in the world on multiple occasions). This restaurant (Can Roca d'Esponellà) is rather more cosy and serves traditional hearty Catalan dishes, done well. And, as they offer takeaway, we were able to enjoy a "home-cooked" meal made by someone else, which was a real treat.
A short drive away (about 20 minutes) is the larger town of Banyoles with its huge lake, and in the other direction is the beautiful walled town of Besalú, which is like a smaller, less touristy version of Carcassonne. We didn't visit either on this occasion, as we have been to both quite regularly.

A point to note is that there is no boundary fence around the house, so you can't leave your dog unattended if they are likely to roam. Willow slipped my attention one day and went into their open house! Gagh! I apologised profusely, but Gloria was totally unfazed - "She's a dog! The door was open! What else was she supposed to do??" :)
There are also LOTS of wild boar around and, although we didn't meet any, you would have to be careful if you were walking at dawn or dusk, and not let your dog wander into the forest.

We had a totally wonderful time here, and will be returning, without a shadow of a doubt.

I found the place through the HomeAway site, and booking through there cost more than twice what it would have cost if I had gone directly to them, but I still felt it offered great value for money. And at the standard rate of €400 for a week at this time of year, it's mind-bendingly cheap.

It looks beautiful! We’ve been in that region a couple of years ago. We often went to Besalu and to Bagnoles and back to San Pere Pescador via ’lEscala.
We also went in the area to walk in the area around where you were. It is very beautiful there!

Oh, I know Sant Pere Pescador very well - I used to camp there at the Nautic Almata (and fell in the muddy canal once, but that's another story). We have several sets of friends with property in Empuriabrava, and used to share a power boat so have been all round the Bay of Roses. We nearly bought there ourselves at one point, but I'm glad we didn't in the end, as I prefer where we are now to live.

This is the kind of holiday rental my OH and I like. The price is a surprise as I'm finding everywhere is now out of our price range.
I have bookmarked this. Thanks for sharing this.

I would love it if you made it over there - it is a perfect retreat for a dog with reactivity issues. The couple don't have any dogs anymore, which makes it easier when you have to worry about a reactive dog. They do have a couple of cats, but they were wise enough to keep themselves to themselves!

In May we stayed at l’Amphora in St. Pere Pescador, in summer in Emporia Brava. We had a great time camping with the kids. We did also want to buy a property there, but changed our minds and bought something here in the woods in The Netherlands. We have very good memories of the region!

Oh I wish I could take the dogs but we would need an extra week to get there lol but we could easily fly to Girona. My OH likes to hire a car and explore the area and this is one area we have not explored.
So this would be a selfish holiday of, reading, walking, touring and just doing nothing much in a place that offers us privacy and peace. My idea of heaven.

Here are some photos of our walks. The dogs all had a total blast.

Just a couple of minutes into one of the walks directly from our house.

Squidge's little face, always smiling up at me :inlove:

Font Roca Barcelona, where water drips through the cliff and creates this cool little spot. Far nicer than the picture suggests!

We had mostly bluebird days, and normally started our morning walks wearing a jacket, but ditched it as we went on. Perfect dog walking weather in May (apologies for the shadowy me!).

We had a few swimming opportunities at various different walks, but I think this was their favourite, just down the road in Crespià.

One of the other Crespià walks is the other side of the river to where we were. See that hole in the rock? That's part of a different walk we didn't do, because J isn't great with heights. You can see more of the walk by looking at the photos on this link: Crespià - Torrent Merler - Pedrinyà - Sant Bartomeu del Portell - Sant Miquel de la Roca - Roca Caputxa - Túnel del Fluvià

Pretty wild flowers everywhere.

GOPR0847.JPG

"Just hurry up and take the photo already!"

GOPR0857.JPG

I loved the effect of the wind rippling over the fields of wheat and barley.

GOPR0883.JPG

Elsewhere, there were fields of rapeseed, with the snow-capped foothills of the Pyrenees in the background.

GOPR0885.JPG

J liked this walk the best. It was flat, with no "cliffs of death" (aka slight drops) to contend with.

GOPR0896.JPG

A forest walk didn't give much in the way of scenery, but the dogs still loved it.

GOPR0931.JPG

Especially when they found the mud.

Our last full day was a bit overcast, but we explored the ruins of a local castle (and my GoPro had died, so I had to rely on my rubbish phone cam)

Squidge peeking her head over the battlements.

But the sun returned for out last morning, and final walk through the fields.

I can't wait to go back, same time again next year!

Oh this looks wonderful. The poppies in the barley field brings back happy memories. You have four gorgeous dogs, they look so chilled.
