Charlie in Badger Fight ;(;(

Today whilst Grace was on a walk during the day a Badger came out of a hedgerow, Charlie went in after it and they had a fight. Much screaming from Charlie and the badger. Charlie grabbed it by the nose and dragged it, it went for Charlie then tried to run away but Charlie went after it. It was absolutely awful. The upshot is Charlie has a ripped ear, bites to his face one of which is a worry to the vet and a few superficial wounds to his leg and mouth. He was definitely in shock as Grace said he wouldn't walk, she coaxed him but he kept stopping, he was panting heavily and drooling. The house looked like a massacre had taken place.

I took him straight to the vet. They came to see him in the car as he was in no fit state to be taken in. The vet gave him an antibiotic and pain relieft shot but told me not to clean the ear wound as it's the blood that will hold it together. She dressed the ear around his head which won't stay on and I have cleaned up his nose and leg.

The vet will make a decision tomorrow morning if he needs surgery on his ear :'(:'( We are all very shaken up. Also worried about the badger but nothing we can do. The vet said even a dog of Charlie's size is lucky to have made it out alive and that badgers seen in the day are more aggressive as maybe they are wounded.

I feel sick that this has happened and can't understand why? Is this going to have an affect on Charlie with dogs? Sorry I'm waffling and still shaking. xx

Heck! Helen, what a dreadful ordeal. I hope Charlie comes through just fine without surgery. Is Grace OK? She must be terribly shook up too. Charlie certainly puts you through the wringer.

@edzbird thanks Grace is fine she's made of tougher stuff than me. She tried frantically to get Charlie away but with the badger so close she didn't want to risk getting bitten too, quite rightly. Charlie will be the death of me, he's tiring that's for sure. I feel so sick, can't eat and still shaking. x

No wonder you’re still shaking @Charlie , what a horrible thing to happen and poor Charlie - I hope he manages to get some sleep and isn’t too uncomfortable poor fellow. The main thing is to get through tonight, and get as much rest as you can so you can make good decisions tomorrow x

I’m so sorry, Helen. That’s a really frightening experience. I hope Charlie doesn’t have any lasting consequences and the wounds heal quickly.

Oh poor Charlie, badgers are weasel family so not the best to get in a fight with. No wonder you are shaken up, I hope you can get through tonight and rest and give the poor fellow lots of hugs. Xx

Oh how scary for you all! I’ve never come across a live badger in the flesh, but they’re solidly built creatures with a lot of weaponry so I’m glad that Charlie wasn’t more badly injured. I hope no surgery is necessary and the pain meds do their magic.
I think it unlikely it will make any difference to how he is with other dogs, as they smell and move so differently, so try not to worry about that.

Poor Charlie! And poor Grace for having to witness, that must have been terrifying and she must have felt helpless. I hope no surgery is required and he heals up quickly

Oh gosh I’m so sorry to hear this, Helen! Badgers can be vicious creatures and those claws can certainly do a lot of damage. I suppose it’s lucky Charlie’s eyes are ok, but poor pooch, how terrifying for him and for you all. I hope he’s able to settle ok tonight and that you and the vet will be able to decide the best course of action today. Prayers and hugs from here.
