Chewed up an asthma inhaler

Well this morning Kipper found one of my asthma inhalers (active ingredient terbutaline sulfate) and chewed it up. I don't think he swallowed any plastic but I phoned the vet to see what they said. Apparently it's used in animal medication in low doses - but his heart rate is very high so I’ve brought him in. They’re concerned about his high heart rate and he’s definitely not comfy, so they’ve taken him off for bloods (looking at potassium levels), blood pressure and to check with the poison line. I’m in the waiting room kicking myself and keeping my fingers crossed

Everything's crossed here too. If he has dosed himself there will either be a antidote or they will support him until it's worked through his system. you hang on in their big hugs. Please don't be hard on yourself you're only human and he's all labrador.

Thank you for all your kind messages. I've just left the vets dogless - Kipper’s on an IV with potassium additives as his potassium levels are dangerously low (2.7 where the normal range is 3.8 to 5.4) and there’s a risk of cardiac arrest. His heart rate was massively up because of low potassium levels, around 180-200 bpm. They’re keeping him in overnight and monitoring heart rate and potassium levels hourly, expecting a significant improvement throughout the day. They’ll call me after 4 with an update, and I can go and see him later all being well.
Man alive; it seems the poison helpline were excellent and he’s in the best hands at the vets. I’m so glad I didn’t wait too long to take him in.

Blimey! What a shock...whoever said having dogs was good for your health? The IV potassium will work quickly though. Thank God for your speedy action on getting Kipper to the vet. Fingers crossed for a steady recovery and home bright eyed and bushy tailed tomorrow x

Not yet, I called half an hour ago to see how he was getting on and they said ‘stable’, but they’d call after 4 - so I’m thinking it might not be on the dot. I’ll keep you posted...
