Last update for tonight, just spoken to the vet again and Kipper’s heart rate has continued to come down, now 128 from 160 and he’s “pretty chilled”. They’re content with progress so will monitor through the night and ring me at 9am after they’ve done a full blood panel.
Thanks again for your kind support and messages everyone, it makes a world of difference :giggle:

Just brilliant news. Did they say what an average resting heart beat would be for a lab, out of interest?

Well now, I remember this from my yet-to-be-written-up dog first aid course - for large dogs it’s an average of 60-100 bpm resting heart rate. But individuals differ widely, and the fitter the dog the lower the heart rate. The suggestion is that you discover this yourself, by waiting til your dog’s dozing or very relaxed, then using the pulse in their inner thigh or chest, count the number of beats over 15 seconds and x4. Do it 3 times and take the average.

Ah, so not that dissimilar to us then really, i thought the range might be higher than that

So glad you have some good news to end your day @HAH. Hopefully you will be able to get some sleep. We will continue to send positive healing vibes for Kipper, Quinn and Mas (and any other pup feeling poorly) across the world from Downunder while you all snooze :)
Same here, thank you - and thinking of all with poorly pups and any other souls for a gentle restorative night x

Just catching up in this and skimming through quickly to see what’s happened. Poor you and poor Kipper. It’s good to hear that his heart rate is coming down. I hope you get some sleep tonight and have even better news in the morning.

Thanks for the warning about inhalers. My youngest son is asthmatic, so I’ll warn him to leave his inhaler safely whenever he’s here.

Oh my gosh, I checked on Quinn's thread and didn't think to look for another sick dog! An asthma inhaler, flaming Nora, it would be funny if it hadn't made him so ill. I'm very glad to hear that all the vital signs came down over the course of the evening. I hope he's fit to return home today.

This morning's update: not much different from last night (a GOOD thing), heart rate currently around 128 but it's been lower overnight so the vet is comfortable with that. They gave him another dose of beta blockers at 7 this morning to keep it down, and because Kipper's heart rate was elevated for so long yesterday and potassium levels took a while to come back up, they want to keep him in today to monitor progress. Apparently the beta blockers wear off around 3pm, so they'll monitor reactions (particularly heart rate) after that and if he's stable and there are no concerns then he can come home around 5pm. She talked through potential long term effects, which are mainly round the kidneys - but the main thing for now is that it's all heading in the right direction and "he's very bright and perky" :)
