Conjunctivitis

Had to take Buddy to the vets today and she said he has conjunctivitis. His eyes were gloopy at the beginning of the week, but he had been sleeping loads as had a hectic weekend with friends and kids staying,so we werent sure if it was just extra sleep in his eyes . They then seemed to be a bit better, but still more eye boogers than usual today, so a trip to the vets to be sure resulting in antibiotic eye gel for 7 days. That's going to be fun for me to attempt to get in when other half away a couple of days next week for work, how I wish I started the bucket training tips when I first saw that thread!

Don’t feel bad @NicW , the number of times through puppyhood I thought “I wish I’d done x earlier” - you just can’t prep for everything. Or at least, not until we’ve got a lot more puppies under our belt!

There are various bits of advice on different threads here, such as distracting your pup with their food bowl, doing the eye drops and feeding straight afterwards. Kipper needed eye drops a couple of times when he was younger, and really didn’t like having anything squidged in his eye. Eventually I did as my mum suggested and put a blob on my (clean) finger and gently wiped it into the corner of his eye, which wasn't ideal but did the job. Good luck!

Different pups deal with it in different ways. Willow had a few bouts of conjunctivitis as a puppy and loved the drops - she obviously found them soothing. She would jump on the sofa and put her head back for me! Shadow caught it from her one time, and he wasn't happy about the drops, but put up with it. Squidge had numerous eye infections as a puppy and HATED having the drops put in. Man, how I worked at it with her! I was by myself for most of the time, and I reckon about nine tenths of every bottle of drops I had went anywhere but her eye. But like anything, "This, too, shall pass" :)

Yes Maisy has had this too, we had a tube of gel, I put a blob on my finger and wiped it in from the corner out. My cue for behaving nicely when I have to do such things is 'Let me see', and she seems to know then that she has to stay still for a bit. We have never used drops but I imagine they are harder to administer. Luckily the infections never last too long once treated.

Poor Buddy!

I think Stanley might have it too. I really hope not, I don’t think I can face the drops again 😭

@Jen, you could always try the used tea bag method, if Stanley’s eyes look a bit gloopy but not full-on infected.
I’ve done this with Plum a couple of times - I know the difference between her eyes needing vet attention and not and wiping used tea bags across her eyes, a number of times a day, has cleared up any gloopiness within a week.

Yes, our Vet actually recommended doing this at the very first sign of messy eyes , try it and if it doesn't work straight to the Vet, but its definitely worth knowing about x
