Today Mr. Aspen got a little too excited when he saw a dog walking by the house and pushed the plexi-glass in our single pane window when he jumped up to the sill to look outside. His paw got trapped between the glass and the trim, and he tried to get his paw out. In doing so, he cut his toes and I could see blood but wasn't sure how bad it was.
Our windows were going to be replaced this week, so it really sucks that this happened but we are lucky that Aspen did not get hurt more than he did.
I held him and calmed him down and got him some treats so I could take a good look at his paw. It looked like they would have to clip his toenail off but like I said I wasn't sure and I don't have the stomach for looking closely at bloody things! We called the emergency vet and brought him in right away. The vet brought him back and shaved/cleaned his paw up to see the damage and when she brought him back he had a cute little bandaged paw.
She said that the cut wasn't bad enough for sutures and said we would just have to keep his paw wrapped and watch out for infection. He was also given some pain medication. We were prepared for him having to go under, but were so lucky it was just a shave and a cleanup.
He is eating a Kong right now and seems to be doing fine. I just don't know how people can handle this stuff with kids! I was shaking and covered in his blood when we got to the vet. Luckily he, like most dogs do for their humans, pushed through the pain and did well for the vet. The vet mentioned that he was still very excited and said that she had a yellow lab in earlier who had been hit by a car, but was still happy and excited just like Aspen. I felt for the owners but was also relieved that Aspen just had two cut toes. I hope the other lab is okay too!
Here are some pics of him in his cone and his lil wrapped up paw.
