Doggy brags

Jazz finished her puppy training last night. At the start she was hard work as she just wanted to sniff the floor and play with the other dogs. As the course progressed her focus improved and she started to pay attention. At the last session she did a great recall with other dogs and food as distractions, then finished the exercise with a sequence of sits, downs and stays. She also did a very good lead walk with the same distractions.
The trainer/behaviourist running the classes was excellent. She chatted with each of us about our pups and suggested that Jazz’s natural intelligence and energy need an outlet. She thought that scent work or agility might be good for her when she’s older.
Our task for now is to consolidate all that training until her responses become consistent. Meanwhile, we’re very proud of our pup!

Very rarely do I have a brag but today I was so proud of Hunter. We have our Sunday walk near woods/water and a dog training/hunting group has just started. Public open space and we had to walk past them training to walk over the bridge. 10 dogs Labbies/Spaniels high octane, whistles ..you get the picture! I grab a small snack in my hand and say "eyes" (been playing this game for years!) and his focus is on me. Ignored all the dogs. We met them again on the way back.....eyes Hunter. I was so proud of him. Of course he was rewarded with the snack and lots of good boy and hugs. 20250126_111347.jpg

Oh Good Boy Hunter!! This is epic, you should be proud - what great concentration amongst phenomenal distractions. I hope the snacks were of the highest value!

A Kipper brag today! Kipper had his regular medication review this morning, and needed a blood sample taken to check liver function. The vet (who is fab) said "I'll just take him out the back", I said I'd like to go too so she asked the vet nurse to come into the consulting room instead. They both started bracing Kipper, and the nurse held his head - which I could see Kipper wasn't comfy with, so I asked if we could pause and regroup. He's brilliant at listening and understanding, but gets suspicious very quickly and will freeze up if things are just done to him (like most of us!). They listened really well; I suggested we let Kipper set himself up, so with some gentle talk he offered to sit in front of the vet, and the nurse supported him without being restrictive and he was so much more comfortable. I gave him squeezy cheese while the vet shaved his neck and took blood, and he didn't move a muscle. I was so, so proud of him and pleased that I'd spoken up - I never used to have the confidence but have taught myself to advocate better. I'm certain it reduced his stress, and helps keep the vets a comfortable (ish) place to be. I made a point of thanking the vet nurse for being so responsive, it was clearly not her usual way but she adapted well.

For context, we do regularly use a red light therapy 'wand' on his elbows, and have set that up cooperatively - and I'm working on my other handling skills to bring in as much choice and consent as possible for him - so I think that history really helped.

 Very well done, Kipper, and also you, Harriet, for speaking up for him. I'm so glad on several counts that your cooperative care way of helping Kipper through a potentially scary situation worked, particularly because with luck it will encourage the vet and nurse to consider using this method in future. It's not always easy to advocate for our dogs, but I feel that if we're able to do so effectively it can make a big difference to our dogs' experiences during vet visits. A well deserved brag!👍
