Dry, dull fur - Poppy not quite right

Poppy has just gone through a massive moult, it seems to be getting worse as she gets older! Her fur now looks dry and dull and generally a mess. Has anyone any suggestions as to anything I can give her to help her skin and fur back into better condition?

A few squirts of Salmon Oil on her food daily should do the trick. xx

Raw virgin coconut oil rubbed well in can revitalise dull fur , and it smells lovely too x Sams coat suffered terribly during his battle with cancer , and I used this x

Zoom groom. ( The brush) Don't need anything on it. Brush every day and her oils will do the rest. Oh and all my dogs love a brush with the zoom groom.

Mine have Omega 3 fish oils in capsule form every day - you can see your face in Meg's very short, black fur & Coco's is plush & shiny too.

I've had real problems with Rory's coat this autumn moult. He's not lost it evenly and looks terrible. He's also a bit bald were someone has pulled bits of ruff out. I've hand eased a lot of fur out and groomed but it's been a bit weird. I wonder if the weather's contributed and his recent colitis flair up

My friends a dog groomer and although it goes against the grain I've honestly thought about sending him round so she can give him a bit of a sort out.

Maybe a trip to the vet's and ask for help there? As well as getting something for his coat they would be able to test for any underlying illness.

Maybe it's an age thing? Rorys 6 now. I did think about some bloods test to check his thyroid out. I been just a bit unhappy with him nothing I can put my finger on though.

Poppy is 7 1/2... Her fur gets really thick with a very dense undercoat and big thick ruff, but boy when she loses her coat it is dramatic. You could honestly stuff cushions with the stuff that comes off her! But like Rory she just doesn’t look great this time, her fur just looks sort of lifeless and patchy - and it’s STILL coming out!

Do you brush her regularly, Karen? I ask because I remember mentioning something about Willow’s dry skin and dull coat a long time ago, and Kate @Beanwood said she almost never brushed hers. So I pretty much stopped and Willow hasn’t had issues since. She gets groomed a couple of times each shed now, but that’s it.

Stress does seem to play a role, too and in the old days when she had significant stresses, I would notice a deterioration of her skin and coat. It feels so good to acknowledge that’s not something I’ve thought about in a long time!!

Shadow has had a couple of awful sheds in the last couple of years, where he’s looked almost naked. It sorted itself out in time, though.

This was what I was thinking too. Brogan's fur got dry and patchy before he was diagnosed with thyroid and started on meds.

I don't actually groom her very much at all @snowbunny, except when she's shedding.

I think the fur will sort itself out in time as you say, but I am actually going to take her in to the vets this afternoon because she's just not quite right in herself. Clingy at times, and yet will go away from us and lie down in the garden. Seems a bit nervous on walks, keeps coming back to me for reassurance. OH thinks she has a tummy upset or possible blockage; I think she has a pre-seizure aura.
