Feeding whilst we wait for tooth extration

Agree re bones—only bones that are edible and can be crunched. I feed Snowie venison necks and ribs, ostrich tails and wing tips, and chicken feet. The bones are raw and have a lot of meat intact on them.

I also feed ostrich kneecaps, which have a tiny bit of bone but a lot cartilage and lot of chewing satisfaction.

Rabbits are ideal, too—small animal with bones that are easily crunched by a dog.

Where do you even get these??

My butcher has one type of bone...the ones that broke Shamas tooth. My grocer sellls the same type, only shorter.

Other than that, it's cooked bones from the pet shop, which I've been warned can splinter and harm him


I do see Turkey backs and necks occasionally at work...

Does your butcher actually butcher the meat on-premises, or is he just a meat seller? What we'd know as butchers actually do the butchery themselves, so always have plenty of various bones. For example, my butcher in Spain will take the breasts of a chicken to order, rather than having packs of pre-prepared chicken breasts. Same with steaks; if you want a rib of beef, he will bring out a whole side and you choose how much you want for him to cut. It's pretty impressive! In Spain and Andorra, people tend to use all the animal in their cooking, though. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe that's the same in most of the USA (it certainly isn't in the UK as a rule). We can buy pretty much anything for human consumption here! Pig trotters, snouts, ears, whole heads of pig and sheep, brains, tripe... all are common on supermarket shelves. Chicken carcasses are sold for stock.

I don't think they butcher the whole animal on-premises. They are part of a larger chain. I asked about other bones, they said they use pretty much everything they get.

I see chicken hearts, giblets, pork liver, tails. tongues and hooves at work. Turkey backs, legs, breasts. necks. fish heads occasionally show up at my cash register..I think the customer requests them.



Shamas had his checkup today.

We are to scour the house for toys..no toys of any sort allowed-he's torn his stitches out and developed an infection. Antibiotics, and continue the Metacam. Doc says he was feeling so good on the Metacam, he didn't realize he'd hurt himself on a ball. All chew-type toys had already been taken away.

If he's not improving in a few days, he'll go back in to do the teeth cleaning and get new stitches done whilst under anesthetic

I got him a puppy level puzzle, to busy him whilst he's not allowed toys. I'll look into others as he gets the idea

So the infection is cleared up, and Shamas is done the antibiotics. I'm considering maintaining "time for your medicine" as a teat time, and am trying to decide on the best treat to give. Probiotic, cottage cheese, chicken heart, etc. Something that will benefit his overall digestive health as he goes back onto a solid diet during the next week
