Fitbark

Many years, before step counting devices, a friend attached a tracking device to his dog cos he was curious to know where she went late at night when he let her out of the flat. He’s a biologist and was tracking wallabies at the time hence why he had a spare tracking device lying around. He imagined his dog was traipsing around the neighborhood all night. Meanwhile she would run up the drive and lie atop a hilly outcrop and remain there for most of the night!

Oooh, my FitBarks arrived yesterday! Just got them set up and looking forward to attaching them. My friend who uses one for her anxious dog has seen some really interesting data regarding his sleep quality. There was a jump in quality immediately he started on a half dose of Fluoxetine and another noticeable improvement when he went up to a full dose.
I'm interested in comparing their various anxiety-based behaviours with quantity of exercise and quality of sleep.

Good! I'm not loving that they have to have their collars on 24/7, but there you go. As it turns out, their sleep quality is generally very good (>90% most nights). It's still very early days in seeing any correlations between things, so I'll give that a couple of months. But they're very discreet, which is good. I was a bit worried they might look like shock collars!

Pepper rested for 19 hours? 😳 that’s the bit that worries me... Mas was active for 10 hours today... maybe I need to put another couple or naps in at work....

Mine look more like that two peaks most days, as they sleep while I’m working. The barkpoints vary a lot between the two of them; they’re obviously calculated using the dog’s age, weight, sex and neuter status so I don’t think you can really compare one dog to another. Most days, Willow does about 9k, and Shadow does about 11k, but when they’re on the go all day (even just mooching about with us) then Shadow will hit the high 20s.

This was yesterday, an average day with two walks, a few minutes of training at lunchtime, and mooching in the garden after our evening walk.

And this was on a day with a quick morning walk (about 40 mins), a longish hike (4 hrs) and a bbq after, followed by a walk home (about 1 hr).

I like to see the down time during the day on an average day, but that’s my lifestyle with working from home.
