Maxx is only off lead on the little beach at the river where there is only one exit. Until he got sick he would often be on the very long lead in the park so he can trot around. He is the happiest dog and loves his walks. We are pretty sure he snaffled something at the park before he got sick so we are avoiding that for now. He has always been independent, no matter how much training we tried and ran off a few times as a puppy and didn't come back (we had to hunt him down) so we made the decision to keep him on lead and it's all fine. I would love to take him to the dog-friendly beach and let him off but we just can't risk it

Update on my once very nervous dog. I have had Flicka just about 4 and half months and in the beginning thought I would have to send her back, I couldn't get her out of the house, so no walks, she was frightened of everything.

I am so pleased I persevered and didn't return her. She is now a delight, virtually a normal dog apart from still afraid of other dogs and even that s getting better. We now can meet the farmer with his four yellow labs and walk with them, we walk with a German Shepherd who is never off the lead she is still wary of him. We walked down the lane with two large Flatboat Retrievers, all on lead but she was perfectly comfortable with them. There is a very nice black Sprocker down the land who was off lead and rushed up to her which terrified her, so now when we meet and he is on the lead she sits and trembles in fear. I think we will get over her fear of dogs eventually. Apart from that, she is a pleasure to own and a very good girl.

Such a lovely update to read! Very well done for persevering, you have achieved so much in a relatively short space of time and I'm sure that given a bit more time Flicka will overcome the other difficulties that she's experiencing. I think you and she were meant for each other.
