There is something very special, isn't there, about the growing and eventually total love for a new pup after we've had to say Goodbye to a so much loved older dog? Every time I worry that I can never love the new little one as much as her predecessor, and every time I find that I do, slightly differently but every bit as much. I'm so pleased for you that you have your lovely Hugo.
Exactly this! I was so worried and so sure I could not love a dog again like I loved Axel. But here I am, loving this boy with everything I have. They are different in a few ways, and so similar in so many ways. But it’s a bit hard to explain, the ways they are similar are of when Axel was older and wiser, those traits shine through Hugo right now.
A couple examples… Hugo entertains himself when I cook my dinners and eat, he used to play on his own but now he curls up by my feet and naps while I do these things. Doesn’t matter if he has just slept all night or napped a couple hours, he will do this. Puppy Axel never did this, I always had to crate him during these times, once older of course he would lie down and nap while I did this but that took months. Adored Axel regardless, of course!

it’s just interesting to me! I can’t help but think Axel chose him for me
