Aww Snowie

I don't know if it helps, but Lilly had a bit of an issue with smelling really cheesy odour coming mainly from her back over the last 6 months or so.
I did notice her fur was coming out, but she has a really really thick ruff area and over her flanks, and these areas were shedding a lot of brown/dead fur.
I made sure that she wasn't getting anything scented after swimming, and P always uses a mildly antibacterial shampoo, no changes there.
I wondered if it was due to her librela, maybe being an issue of mild immunosuppression. Probably doing the 2+2=6 thing here though...

Anyway, I worked diligently over the last 3 months to brush her with a "furminator" once or twice a week and tried a mouse that the vet suggested, just using it once a week.
DUOXO S3 PYO . It is antibacterial and antifungal.

LIilly's coat is much less brown and her odour is much reduced. To be fair, I've only used the PYO stuff about 4 times.
I think she maybe had seborrheic dermatitis.

Anyway, not sure any of this is of any help at all, but just sharing our experience.

That wound looks so much better - a big step forward even as you’re understandably worried about the new fur loss. Snowie sure is giving you and your vet a challenge!

Your vet’s office dogs look so sweet. 😍 The señor’s vet in Germany also has her dogs in her office - I used to think it was too nutty (there’s a lot of them) and even be afraid of some of them, but now it’s just part of the full vet experience to be surrounded by scrappy scruffy ex-street dogs. Carbón seems to enjoy them - reminds him of his old prison days? 😉

Thank you @Jacqui-S, sharing your experience helps hugely. We were at the vet yesterday. He took a skin surface sample (used sticky tape on the groin area) and looked at it under a microscope. No bacteria, but a ton of yeast. He said Snowie has a massive yeast overgrowth. Likely as a side-effect from taking the antibiotics. We are to bath Snowie in Malaseb shampoo every three days. Actually, we had to bath him yesterday and again tomorrow, then back to vet on Friday for a checkup. Vet wants us to shampoo aggressively (lots of foam!) and try to manage this topically. There is an antifungal tablet, but the vet is reluctant to give Snowie more meds on top of what he’s already taking.

Unfortunately we don’t have that mousse here in SA. I think you can import it at huge cost. We only have the shampoo. It’s a pain (back breaking!). Vet suggested taking Snowie to a doggie parlour for the baths, but my husband thinks it will stress Snowie too much in his old age. Easy for him to say—I’m the one who does the bathing!!

I just wish I knew why Snowie has been so susceptible to yeast overgrowth his entire life. What’s going on with his immune system?

That’s a lot of fur! Does Snowie like it when you’re giving him a scrub? If he’s itchy from the yeast, it might feel wonderful to him. Or he may be thinking, “Wait, didn’t I just have a bath?!”

That’s really good news about the bacteria being gone now. Antibiotics did their thing!

He loves being scrubbed (not keen though to stand in the shower, always trying his luck to escape). And he loves a good rub down! But I’m so reluctant to rub too much cos just with gentle stroking and I end up with loads of fur in my hand. It’s the top coat. It’s not normal shedding.

He’s not itchy at the moment, which is interesting given his condition. But the vet did give him a Cytopoint injection. I’m not super keen on it; I worry about immune issues. The vet, however, thinks it is important to keep his skin inflammation under control and believes the Cytopoint does that. I just wonder if it’s exacerbated the problem.

Ella has cytopoint every 8-10 weeks through spring and summer, less in winter. I completely understand your concerns, for us though, the relief from the itching has been absolutely life changing. I guess with any medication you have to weigh up the benefits with any possible side effects and decide where that fits for your individual case.

Glad you're starting to see some improvement though, hope it continues.

He is sooo cheerful! It is quite amazing. And then you look at him. My sister said he looked decrepit. 😢 My mother said he looks moth-eaten. He has lost so much fur. Bald patches especially where his harness goes. The wound, however, looks amazing. Fur growing back. So I am hopeful the rest of him will improve.

Antibiotics were stopped yesterday. Vet wants to see him in 2 weeks again. He has a loose lump under the skin where the second wound closed up. The vet is hoping it’s just scar tissue. He doesn’t want to poke Snowie with needles anymore, feels it does worse harm than good. And really, I’m of the mind that I don’t want anymore treatment on Snowie cos he just gets worse.

The bathing is going well, especially since my husband is doing it!! It was backbreaking. I just sit and hold the shower door closed. Much easier!

This all sounds really positive! Ignore the comments (which frankly I would be pretty annoyed at if I were you). He’s happy and FINALLY the wound is healing and he’s growing some new fur - that’s amazing after this long battle. It doesn’t matter what he looks like - and I still think he’s dead handsome 😍 - he’s still here, still cheery, and still your big baby. Definitely something to celebrate. 🥳🥳🥳
