Wow!

This is the reason I puppy walk and have a broken heart once a year xx

Keano - Guide Dog

“My guide dog Keano always goes above and beyond, without me ever having to ask.
I have an 11 year old son with autism. He has no awareness of danger so keeping him safe can be a challenge.

Ever since I got Keano. My life has become a whole lot easier in so many ways. He guides me but he also does so much more without ever being trained or asked. My son has not had a meltdown since I got Keano. That’s because Keano has alerted me to the fact that my son is becoming stressed, so I can sooth my son before it ever turns into a meltdown.

Keano has learned to follow my son. We were in an amusement arcade last summer and my son was playing one of the machines, Keano and I were standing behind him. Suddenly my son dashed off. I picked up the handle and Keano dashed off after him. Keano put his nose on my son’s tummy. He got huge praise and a treat for that. Keano guides me around the play park after my children too.

On school runs, Keano does what can only be described as herding. He makes sure that he is between my son and the road while still guiding me perfectly. If my son drifts too close to the pavement edge for Keano’s liking, Keano blocks him and gently pushes him back. If my son speeds up or slows down. Keano adjusts his own pace accordingly, all the while guiding me faultlessly. We live in a village so the school runs are on mostly quiet pavements. I always make sure that my husband is in charge of my son in town etc so that Keano can give guiding me his full attention. My eldest son tells me that Keano is still checking to see where my autistic son is though. Either Keano has a real fondness for my autistic son, or he thinks I am not a very good parent and need his help. Either way, I very much appreciate what Keano has taken upon himself to do for us. He is an amazing dog x”

This was Keano at nine months old 🐾💕

He has his own blog.

What amazing fuzzballs! And I love how similar they look, although Spirit (? on our left) looks a little heavier which suits his slightly broader face. They're proper handsome x

They are gorgeous dogs.

I'm wondering how the people they become guides for manage with that sort of coat. Are the dogs regularly checked by someone? I have this awful fear of a dog getting a sore tangle his companion can't see, and the dog could struggle in pain. Am I being unrealistic? I do hope so.

They are taught to groom their dogs and to groom them every day - by feel. When I saw my friend groom her Guide Dog I realised she was much more thorough than me!

The dogs have welfare officers who check them regularly and are always available by phone for questions. (as do the pups - a separate role from the supervisors)

How often do the welfare officers check? I ask because my sister (a paramedic) recently had a GD removed from his home and put under veterinary care because he was very unwell and clearly not being looked after by his mentally ill owner.

I wondered this too. I reported an owner in our village who had a guide dog. She left the lovely boy in the garden in all weathers and didn't use him to guide her. I don't know what happened to him but I was told there was no concern for this dogs welfare. Lots of residents were so worried about the dogs life. I am sorry to say I wasn't convinced GD even visited as I can't imagine they would have been happy with how this dog was treated. She now unbelievably has another guide dog. xx
