Guide Dogs and Puppies

She’s a lovely dog and, although she no longer works and you decided not to have her back, she’s the reason why you’re still doing such a great job puppy-walking more guide dog puppies.

What a wonderful testimony.

This is a young woman who has a four year old boy.

I was really missing Keir today, it was his second birthday on Friday - and I was wondering how he’s doing at Big School learning to be a hearing dog as well as a guide Dog for his new young owner. This kind of post keeps me going.

“September 2018 I lost the majority of my sight overnight. By February I hadn't left my house in 5 months save for a handful of occasions, when I was paired with Luna just 5 days into being on the waiting list. She was ever so lovingly raised by her puppy walker and has given me the strength not just to leave my house in general but to go out independently.

I had spiralled into depression quite quickly and I had never been at such an all time low with my mental health.
And I'm sure almost all guide dog owners will say that their pups also double as a therapy dog! She has this uncanny ability to know when I’m getting overwhelmed and anxious and she'll plop her head on my lap.
And even though she wont be with me the strength and the confidence she has installed into me has pushed me to do something about my depression, and start swimming again!
It's amazing how far their love and support does carry you. Let's just hope who ever is sharing the lane with me wont mind swimming head first into me on occasion 🙈🤷‍♀️

Picture shows Luna who is a yellow lab x retriever laying cuddling my yellow fluff ball of a cat, China.”

I listened to a podcast the other day, talking to a person who trains service dogs. When asked what her proudest dog-related achievement was, she recounted a story where she took a Labrador out of a shelter and trained him up to be a hearing dog. After training, he was paired with a 33-year old man, who was profoundly deaf. During orientation, the man's mother was present as a translator. The dog alerted to a knock on the door, the fire alarm, all the things the man wouldn't be able to hear. Watching the dog alerting her son, the mother said to the trainer, "He's going to get out!". The trainer said something along the lines of, "Oh yes, he'll get out and about to walk the dog". "No,", said the mother, "if there's a fire, he's going to get out!".
Service dogs make such a profound difference not only to the people they are paired with, but also everyone who cares about those people.

As a matter on interest, when you become a puppy walker, do GD prefer you to already have an adult dog of your own?
No, they are happy with dogs or no dogs and the pups have to sleep on their own - but they usually want PWs to have no more than two pet dogs.

Wow, beautiful stud dog and what an adorable little pup Peggy is. I hope you have a similar thing to hang up for your pups @Boogie
I do!

My husband makes them. We sell them and give a % of the profit to GDs.
