Halloween: Pet owners warned against dressing up animals

When we adopted Nelly , we fetched her from her previous home in Devon . The then owner had a carrier bag packed by the front door , with her belongings . When we got home , having called in at Pets at Home for a disc and food , I found the bag to contain clothes they had bought for her , it went in the bin xx

No I don't really like dressing up animals, especially not to make a spectacle of them for human amusement. When my daughter was small though she loved to dress our then JR and push her about in the doll's pram. That little dog was a willing participant and loved being the focus of attention. She could have removed herself at any time but never did. Although, she did once greet the postman while wearing a tutu :giggl:

I don't know if you remember the fabulous photo shoot session I had with Joy last year, but Lisa, the photographer who was excellent had said that she would be interested to do some studio shots with her, if I'd like. I had some reservations because to me Joy is so much an outdoors dog, and if I wanted indoors photos I would like them to be taken at home, preferably by the Fireinametalbox. Anyway I thought I might just check out her website and what did I find? Dressed up dogs! Dogs in all manner of hooman clothing perching on chaise longues and such like!😲😟😢 So No Thankyou Lisa! That's not what my GGJ is for. To my mind it makes beautiful beings look ridiculous and unnatural for the amusement of humans which is a form of abuse.

Ella might possibly tolerate a costume but I don't believe she'd be fully comfortable so I'd never bother.

Having said that, if a human determines that their dog is OK and not worried about the extra outfit, I personally don't really see the harm 🤷
That's absolutely a fair point Emily. I think that what makes me uncomfortable is if it appears to have been done for the amusement of people with no regard for the dog's feelings. Although I have to maintain that I would never choose to dress a dog of mine up in clothes, just because they're always perfect exactly as they are.xxx  :heart:

Shamas loves dressing up--he has a wardrobe of 4-6 hoodies depending on his size. When I go to remove them, he plays "sack of potatoes" and makes it very difficult.

This dates back to the year I got him, and he had 0 cold tolerance, shivering at 5C He became a coated dog. With his hips going the way they are, I'm looking for a horse blanket style wrap for him---focus on warming the hips so he can walk.

For Halloween, he's worn his Icefang harness with a plastic K9 badge on his collar. And a Batman outfit he loves. I believe for him it's all about the positive feedback he gets in clothes.

As far as Trixie goes....no more clothing than necessary. She clearly doesn't like things on her back
