Hattie's Tripping and Wobbliness

So sorry Helen, but you are doing your best for her. This new vet seems on the ball. I know you will, but try not to worry

I’m so sorry. I’d be angry, too.

Can you ask your vet to translate this into layman’s language that will mean something to you? And what are the next steps? Are there further tests or treatment? Or just the food? If it were me, I’d look on Facebook for a canine kidney support group who can share their experiences with you.

I'm sorry Helen I have experienced this first hand. If your current vet can grade Hattie for you that will help. It will give you an idea were Hattie is in her organ failure. Changing to the food is good but also find which food you can cook for her because loss of appetite is common in this condition. They seem to like the tinned food better too. There are kidney diets you can follow yourself which you may find useful.your vet sounds good and a least now you have a baseline for her bloods. It's not easy but dogs with these type of conditions can have a good quality of life.

Really sorry that you've had this news. However your vet sounds excellent and I'm sure wouldn't mind a call back asking for further explanation. Now you know the problem you can put in place food and life-style changes to support her. x

Oh I'm sorry to hear that Helen.
I don't know a lot about dogs and kidneys. In humans a degree of kidney failure is common with age and although can add to general morbidity, isn't normally a cause of death.
Probably discussing whether an ultrasound would help is a good idea.
You definitely need to discuss this more with your vet.

I have to take Hattie back to the vet on Monday for blood pressure check, the vet said she would have some layman's terms information for me and explain things further. She is going to talk about treatment, medication, food and a plan. It's just a long time to wait. On and off she has had a little loss of appetite but her weight is stable at 25 kg. She is drinking more.

Think I will take David with us on Monday incase I forget to ask anything. Thank you xx

So sorry you’ve had this news; I’m sure it must have knocked you, and it’s no wonder you didn’t absorb all the information to start with.
Kidney problems are quite common in Leish dogs (from both damage caused by the parasite and the drugs used to control the parasite), so it’s quite high on my radar. I’ve not had to deal with it myself, but on the FB group I’m a member of, there are quite a few dogs with kidney issues. From what I’ve seen, in the earlier stages, it’s relatively easily manageable with specific renal diets.

As @SwampDonkey says, it’s good that you now have numbers that you can use as a baseline as you tweak things; that will let you know if they are working.

I’m glad your vet seems switched on and friendly; it’s so important to be able to trust your vet and this one sounds like a good one.

So sorry to hear this. I agree with the others in that your vet sounds excellent. Write down everything you can think of for Monday, and having David along for an extra set of ears and support will be helpful.

Sorry to hear these results Helen, but good thing your new vet is on the ball. I second the advice to join a facebook group - I have found lots of food info/advice and medication discussions for Quinn's IBD diagnosis from joining an IBD group. When speaking to your vet, take some notes so you don't forget what they told you (OH and I hear things completely differently when we are in the same room :ROFLMAO:). I like going away and doing my own research, then following up with my vet to see if X,Y,Z could work for us, etc.

So sorry you have had this news, but as the others have said it sounds like your vet knows what he/she's doing and Hattie is in good hands, both at home and medically. So try not to worry. Hopefully you will have a clearer idea of a plan forward once you have the next appointment.
