I have a solution 
There's a little petshop around the corner from me-he specialises in Parrots. I dropped in today and explained my situation to him,a nd he can order me Merrik Limited Ingredient from his suppliers. He can also get me an All Life Stages cat food. Price point is a bit higher than the one we;re on, but I'm familiar with the brand, so I'll give it a go. And Shamas handles Lamb protein pretty well. My only concern-Lentils as a top ingredient. Perhaps I'll rotate the Merrik at supper with Iams for breakfast(low quality food makes a lot of waste), which is the grocery brand that the vet said would be acceptable in the short term. The FDA report DId say not to panic, so I'm not going to completely rule out grain-free...but I'll take the precaution of keeping another food in his diet so that he's not completely on the grain-free diet.
