He has changed so much

Reuben is eleven months old today and so yes, one would expect changes but there has been a massive shift over the past month or so . He is now passionate about retrieving , actually preferring his ball/dummy over treats every time . I`ve found this passion to be a fantastic tool , especially when around distractions as he will not even look at other dogs if we are engrossed with his ball/dummy , this is great as he is by nature a very sociable ( read excitable ! ) young lad who used to accost any poor unsuspecting human he came across ! He no longer jumps up, thank goodness as he is now 35 kilos and rising  , still gets very excited when anyone visits home, but he is slowly improving , bless him .
His recall is grand , working three ways , whistle , voice or hand signals . I am convinced that his awful experience in the forest a couple of months ago has made him aware of the importance of recall as it has been fantastic ever since that awful day . He is a very loving dog , adores his cuddles and snuggling up close but morphs into a grown up big boy once we get out and about . He still tends to pull on lead at the start , fortunately most of our walks are 95% off lead , just using the lead until it is safe to release him , same on the homeward trip . Coming back , he will walk beautifully to heal , most likely because he is tired out ! Reuben is very protective towards Nelly , getting quite upset if she is having one of her little chiari caused episodes , and he watches her on walks , if she lags behind too much for his liking , he will round her up x
I dont mind admitting that I have found it hard work and tiring , especially in the first few months when I wondered what the heck I had done , but it has all been worth while , we adore our boy who is making a smashing dog , he has his moments of course but there is no perfect dog , we love him very much indeed xxxxx

You have achieved such a lot in such a short space of time and I am so pleased for you. I often think about what an undertaking you took getting a puppy especially after you were so ill last year and have so many calls on your time. You are one very strong lady 😄

Lovely to read this Kate. It's one of my favourite bits of having a dog I think, when they start growing into the dog they will become and soaking things up like sponges and suddenly you realize you're getting that lovely bond. You have done so well with Reuben and thoroughly deserve this. Well done!

Thank you, for your lovely comments xx Reuben is great nephew to my dearly missed Sam . I was set against having a family member , due to Sams cancer , but had a chat with a friend who is a Vet , her area of expertise being canine cancer , she assured me that by having Reuben , I would not be running any more of a risk than I would be from a totally unrelated line, despite my fears. He has many of his great uncles attributes , I try hard not to compare as it would be unfair , but there is no getting away from the fact that the similarities are there, size being one ! xxxx

This is so lovely to read Kate - what a fabulous young dog Reuben’s growing into, with your help and guidance along the way. So many adventures yet to come! X

Alison , I think that having been so desperately ill last year was just another incentive to have a puppy . Having been told that I may never regain muscle strength , I decided that a Labrador puppy would be just the ticket to prove the consultant wrong ! Nelly, bless her heart , will plod along on walks but she doesnt actually need long rambles and often stays with Paul , so in fact Reuben has done me a great service in making me get out and exercising those muscles ! Plus, due to the calls on my time , the long walks are a wonderful therapy , its my time xxxx
