Something positive at last!

The problem seems to be an inflammation of her large intestine, not a blockage, so there will be no surgery. Holly will be on frequent small meals, pills and close observation for the next few days. We have to take her back at the first sign of anything wrong. Only gentle walks are allowed.

I weighed her as we left the vet. Since last week her weight has dropped from 28.4 kg to 26.7 kg.

Apart from a small portion of chicken and rice she hasn't eaten since Sunday. The vet gave her a small tin of food for sensitive stomachs, and apparently it went down in two mouthfuls.

Holly is now at home.

So pleased no surgery has been required.

Hope she’s on the mend quickly.

Typical stoic Labrador - even though her tummy must be hurting her she can’t resist food. Good girl Holly!

That's good news! I'm so glad she's home. Do you have any idea what could be the cause of the inflammation? Could it be a scrape or reaction of some description from something she's eaten, or just a bug?

Great news!

When Snowie had HGE (hemorrhagic gastrointeritus), he made many bloody poos (poos like raspberry jam). He lost a lot of weight cos he was on strict rations of tiny amounts of roast chicken for a week at a time. Every time he improved, we’d go back to his regular diet, and he’d have a relapse. Later we added kefir, and we think the probiotics must’ve helped a lot cos it was then that he turned the corner. Took about two months to come right.

We think it was caused from eating human poo and possibly E. coli infection as a result. Thankfully many years have passed and his yen for human poo has disappeared (or maybe there is none on our mountain walks) and his gut is in good health we hope!

Best of luck to Holly to have a quick recovery.

We’ve no idea what caused it. Talking to the vet there are so many possible causes that it’s impossible to pin it down, especially with a scavenger like Holly. We think a mesh ‘bait muzzle’ might help with the scavenging so I’m looking for one online.

:dancesheep: Excellent news! So glad she doesn’t need surgery! And that she’s home again, phew. Hope the pills work their magic and she’s back in good health quickly. In the meantime, gentle pats for her from here.

Yes I thought of Sky having HGE when I read Holly’s symptoms. We never found the cause but she was a scavenger/poo eater and we had to muzzle her on walks thereafter. We had a mesh muzzle for about a year but then got a Baskerville type which she got on better with. Pleased Holly is home 😊
