Horrible experience with guns

Yes , I will take things very slowly indeed with him . I remember the first time I walked him on lead round the village , he hadn't experienced traffic before and was frightened so I took him home , then tried again after a few days , fed him lots of treats and eventually he got used to the tractors which trundle through the village , its all slow at his age as I don't want to get it wrong x

I was caught off guard at the beginning of the shooting season. I was walking down a public track with woods on either side. A young lad at the bottom with a Labrador. He didn't say anything when a few loud shots went off. Scared the living daylights out of me but Hattie didn't even notice, she's so used to it. I asked the lad if it were ok for them to be shooting so close to the track and I mean close, I could hear the shooters chatting quite clearly. No reply. There are horses in the paddocks alongside the track. It really is a miserable time of the year for walkers. I know there are some people who take part but sometimes I do feel it takes the biscuit. x

You must have been so scared, Kate, and then relieved that Reuben had gone back to the car. It’s easy to imagine all sorts of things when they run off in a blind panic. Well done, Reuben, for remembering your ‘safe place’.

The guns have been out recently near our favourite woods, but fortunately my two don’t react, even though other things can make them a bit edgy. I think I react more to the guns than they do!

Yes , real guns I`m afraid , its closed season for most game now but pigeon and rabbit can be shot all year round x
Can they shoot anywhere? That seems so dangerous near a wooded area where people can walk. :(

Gunshot scares the bejeezus out of me even when I know it's from hunters. Where I grew up it wasn't from hunting, if you get my drift.

I believe there is a certain distance from a public footpath which must be adhered to, also there should be someone by the footpath to alert the guns and they should stop shooting until you pass by.

We had a wonderful walk this morning , not the forest but a local wood where I met a man I used to walk with years ago with his Lab Honey , and my Sam . It turned out that Honey had died not long after Sam , and he now has a whirlwind 13 month old Lab girl called Red . She and Reubs had a blast , came back filthy but happy and no signs of stress after yesterday . I found the Dogs Trust download of gun shot , and whilst he was relaxed and happy after the mad play , I started the CD, very quietly and watched him . He looked up, but I carried on peeling the veggies , and he went to sleep . I will play it very quietly every day whilst doing " normal " things , and hopefully he will become accustomed over time xxx

Its a forest trail I walk often , so the little lad knows where to find the car which is always in the same spot , phew ! This is the third time I have heard shot in this place , Laneskin Woods, nr Bodmin , but on the other occasions it wasn't so close by , so although he noted it, he wasn't too bothered . The forest is managed by the Forestry Commission , I might just e mail them and ask for their stance on shooting on their land which is open to the public to wander . Reubs seems fine , he was so pleased to see me when I got back to the car , and visa versa ! xx
I’d definitely send the Forestry Commissioner an email.
I feel your need for peaceful places to walk our dogs. I long to move to the country for peace and quiet but know that that is just a dream.

My quiet walks are my salvation ! I am a carer for Paul , he is disabled and then suffered a stroke two years ago , also my daughter has MS , she lives close by so I sometimes do the cooking for her and her family too . Don't get me wrong , I am not complaining , far from it but my walks really are sanity savers at times , stress busters ! xxx
