How did you choose your dogs name?

Was sitting here tonight and thinking about anything other than the obvious and it occurred to me that we all have some diverse names for our dogs so I thought it would be a way to pass the time for me to know this stuff 😂

Leo was named after a character in Little Einstein’s by my daughter.

Maslow was named after the heirachy of needs.

Howell was after Dan Howell, the you tuber.

What a good question!
I still have my Google Keep list of names we went through - some on a Nordic theme (watching ‘the Last Kingdom’ probably), lots from PG Wodehouse books (Bertie, Reginald, Bingo etc.) and one of the characters is ‘Kipper’ Herring. Because smoked kippers are an orangey colour it seemed to fit him quite well. And we only discovered afterwards Kipper is a children’s book character :)

Quinn was the result of many, many names that we did not agree on. We wanted a human name....OH's top pick was Gracie, but I knew my best friend planned to name her daughter Grace and couldn't do that (she did in fact have baby Grace a year later). I wanted Maci. The only name we both liked was Quinn, and OH finally finally said yes, as the Toronto Maple Leafs head coach for a time was Pat Quinn (some hockey reference I could care less about).

I just knew his name was Stanley.

When we went to pick him I had no names in mind but as soon as I saw him I said Stanley and that was it. OH didn’t like it and wanted something more “doggy” but I never changed from Stanley and OH never offered a half decent alternative so Stanley it was.

I’m hoping something similar happens with the baby but right now we’re stkll drawing a blank đŸ˜«

I think names are so important I take a long time thinking about them. I usually have a few and the choice crystallises when I meet the creature. They must be something which is easy to say and not easy to mishear. I tend to go for the less common or fashionable names because call my dogs name I don't want to get 6 coming. Theres a lot of dogs round here and a lot of them have the same name it can get confusing.

We knew Willow and Shadow since birth and looked after the whole litter for a week when they were teeny bubs. Whenever we were a puppy short bringing them back in, it was always little puppy Charlotte and she was always under the willow tree. So when she was ours, it was obvious that was going to be it.

Shadow was a bit more of a “dunno”, and we had lots of possibilities for him. We chose Shadow as we went to pick him up. We both have history with greys (horses) called Shadow, so we were OK with him being a pale colour with that name. Turned out it was a perfect name as he totally was a little shadow, following us everywhere.

Luna... we wanted to keep on with the natural theme and make it something meaningful. By this point, we had bought our place in Spain and we get amazingly clear skies there. I gave J a list of possibilities and left it to him to choose. I’m not a massive fan, though, and she was so squidgy as a pup, so Squidge it is 😂

Ginny... well, we like gin. Good enough? đŸ€Ș Although her full name is Juniper Berry, obviously.

Mama Red HOT Pepper
I'm a big fan of Scottish or Irish names. They just sound nice and solid with a little bit of mischief. Duncan sounded like a dog you could rely on - and he was - and I have to admit being a fan of The Highlander TV show at the time so that may have had some influence. ;) Tavish was another Scottsman, which was kind of funny as he was a toy poodle. His rescue name was Roger and..um..no. That was my thought, "Hasn't the poor little guy been through enough?"

Mama Jodhi came as a foster with the name "Jodi". I added the "h" for a little pizzaz and Brogan added the "Mama". :giggle:

Brogan's rescue name was Stefan. Again, that would be a 'nope' from me. Not an ugly name, just not my thing. He was Piglet for a month because I couldn't decide on a name. I was reading a book by an Irish author with a character named "Rogan" and I just thought it sounded nicer with a "B" which makes it an Irish surname.

Had my theoretical puppy's name all picked out during my breeder search - even approved as 'proper Irish and not that fake American stuff' by my Irish friend. Guess that one is going into cold storage for a while!

We’ve named our last two ladies after Disney princesses (OH’s suggestion ). So we had (Princess) Jazzmynn from Aladdin for almost 12 years, and are now thoroughly enjoying our (Princess) Ariel from The Little Mermaid (2 years old).

On a side note, we’ve also had a Tia (Tia Maria), and a Sasha (nicknamed Sam Squench) for whatever reason. These two were both adopted mixed dogs but loved them just like the princesses named above.

Cassie is Cassis really, I was mulling over whether to have one of my friends litter of puppies when a gift shop I was helping out in ran a tasting promoting local Cassis , and I thought hmm black lab, black currant. Her mum is called Tia Maria, so it sort of fitted. Cass has a sister called Sherry and one called Bailey. Once I had the name i had to have a puppy! It suits her.

I have a strict "no human names" policy for pets (Daisy cat came to us in her retirement and we kept her name). I wanted a two-syllable name, specifically Rio, but OH and Dawn vetoed it. They came up with lots of suggestions but none of them were "right". Then one day I had a eureka moment and Xena, Dog Princess was decided upon. I still love it today. But I always have to say "Xena, like the princess" when I'm giving her name at the vet's because people automatically assume it's spelt with a Z.

The cats are Serenity (like the tv show) and Sherpa (she was a climber as a kitten).

Hehe, I was the complete opposite! I wanted Ella to have a human girl's name. I also wanted it to have two syllables.

We picked a handful of names, wrote them on a piece of paper and left it on the coffee table. Over about a week, we crossed off a few names and both agreed on Ella.

We were a little worried about telling the breeder as her old girl Ellie (Ella's great grandmother) died just before Ella's mum became pregnant. When we told her she said that Ellie's registered name was actually Ella - which made me even more worried - but she was thrilled and thought it was wonderful that one of the pups would be called Ella, in memory of her dear Ellie
