Hunter has a Suspected Ruptured ACL

So..my OH came with us which helped. Within 5 sec torn cruciate diagnosed with slippage in his knee and also obvious arthritis. He advised to operate as the operation will be successful and have little impact on his elbows as long as he rests properly
Of course 3 months for recovery. We have agreed to let him rest and make an appointment next Thursday to check for any improvement and to decide about the operation. There are other options but for now we are considering the operation route. Thank you for all your kind words and thoughts. You have no idea what it meant for me x

That sounds promising. My 11 year old collie-x had three more years of active life after her cruciate ligament op. i was worried about the operation at her age, although she didn’t have other issues. She tolerated the crate rest afterwards very well and we followed up with regular hydrotherapy (a water treadmill, rather than swimming), so maybe that would be helpful for Hunter too. Thinking of you.

Well DONE @Loraseal , and I’m so pleased your OH came along too. Now you can try to rest your heads for a bit - it’s a really difficult time you’re all having, hopefully the clarity is helpful. Go really gently with yourselves.

The timing is going to be an issue. We are on holiday next Friday for a week and we have hired a cottage in llanymynech at the end of July so I can help look after my Mum and Dad. Not sure if Hunter will be OK to travel. Will have to wait and see. I might buy a knee brace for now to see if that helps. Dr Howe was curt but professional and showed/explained what the procedure will entail. My OH is on the way to accepting the operation which has helped. I think I may sleep better tonight.

Only just catching up with this, @Loraseal and so sorry to hear about poor Hunter. If it's any help, our Solstice had cruciate ligament surgery when she was eight and made a good recovery. We found the post op. aftercare rather hard work ( more for us than her I suspect) but this was partly due to it coinciding with us having a new kitchen fitted, so with luck it might be a bit less stressful for you.
It's still a worry though, and an upsetting time and my thoughts are with you. :thelambiesarecoming:

I’m so sorry to hear that Hunter has torn his cruciate on top of his other battles. It sounds like you had a good consult, though, and are thinking you may be able to handle surgery after all, or at least that there are options.

I’ve had dogs go through cruciate surgery three times and while the recovery was long, for me and my dogs it was absolutely worth it. In one case the vet advised that my girl was really at too an advanced age so it it would be better to manage with pain meds and that worked out fine too. I hope you can find the option that’s best for you and Hunter. ❤

The recovery for us is already known territory. We dealt with 2 sets of elbow surgeries on a 5 month Labrador on crack! It's just so upsetting Hunter has to go through this all again. I really have to help my parents at the end of July so the timing of the operation is playing on my mind. I did sleep better. Hunter is sulking because we didn't get our cappuccino, croissant and visit to the pet shop today. His limping is better this morning but due to the increased pain meds and forced rest.
