Hunter

I know Christmas was a long time ago now but I just realised I haven’t told you about Hunter’s Christmas and that really I could do to record the event so when things go pear shaped and I’m pulling out my hair I can look back and see it really did happen.;)

Well Hunter’s first Christmas was memorable and for once for all the right reasons. This year we had Christmas dinner at my cousin’s down the lane. Everybody takes something even me. I inherited the job of making my nan’s plum pudding from my mum. Amazingly I can do it !!!! Anyway Hunter was invited too !!! I wasn’t convinced it would work and I was prepared to eat outside if necessary but he was amazing!!! He behaved so well. We went down early before everyone arrived so there was just Pat, Andy and my auntie. It took maybe 15 minutes or so for the novelty and excitement to wear off and then he was so good. Even when my eldest cousin and his family arrived. His daughter and her OH have two miniature dachshunds that never stop yapping and I mean never. They went in a room on their own with the dachshunds because they’d started yapping before they even came in the house. Hunter wasn’t bothered by the noise. When we were ready to eat I sat at the end of the table Hunter sat by me on his lead. He occasionally moved to try and get to a bag of presents left in the middle of the room but when we got to pudding he went and curled up on the couch and dosed off !!! I couldn’t believe how easy it went. Technically he’s still a puppy, he was only seven months old ! Obviously there were moments of great excitement but he behaved so calmly. I was honestly amazed. :shock:Scott and Scout would never have coped with it and even Murphy at that age would’ve been super excited. The unwrapping of presents wasn’t quite so calm :rofl:998A1571-3E98-48DC-AB71-17965C00FC80.jpeg9278AE6A-43A6-429A-8910-3A05B03DCA15.jpegBD4976B9-D2D7-4EA2-8C87-4ACF331A1456.jpeg

Hunter had only been inside their house once before although we play in their garden on a regular basis, in fact he’s just been butt tucking round it on the way back from our walk. There were 12 people eating, drinking, making lots of noise some he’d only met once or twice. He wasn’t phased at all. Greeted everyone happily then settled. I still find it amazing that a young Labrador would behave so calmly in those conditions. Even more amazing that it was my young Labrador :cwl:

Hunter, such a good boy!! That’s very impressive and definitely something to be very proud of! Such a handsome boy with a beautiful shiny coat 😍 I love seeing how much they change during the first couple years ❤

Hunter is now 9 months old !

Over the last few weeks or so Hunter seems to be gradually getting the concept of retrieving. I got him a Kong comet for Christmas to try and increase his prey drive, get him excited about retrieving etc. It’s possibly not the most conventional method of training the retrieve but it seems to be working. I throw the kong, Hunter runs for it, picks it up, I start running the opposite way shouting fetch it loud and excitedly, Hunter races after me with kong dropping it when he gets to me. It’s not pretty and goodness knows what people passing who hear me must think but Hunter’s having fun.

You probably already know the RCVS have brought in new rules which mean dogs need to be seen by a vet every twelve months to get prescription wormers. Despite the fact Hunter was seen in August I had to take him to the vets last Sunday because he’s not been seen since the new rules. It was his first time going since I couldn’t carry him and It was interesting. I need to do a lot of work on getting him used to the car again. Now I can’t lift him in I had to take the crate out so he can jump so now he needs to get used to being in the boot. Outside and inside the vets he was super worked up/excited nose stuck to the ground. We got Mike the vet who’d looked after Scout and put him to sleep. Unfortunately he didn’t give Hunter chance to calm down however Hunter did let him examine him. The only thing he didn’t like was the stethoscope. When he put that on him he jumped like it was a branding iron. Thankfully we had first appointment so it wasn’t busy but it was rather hard work albeit for a different reason than with Scott and Scout. He did say hello to a man and his dog who where in the waiting room with us so I don’t think he was nervous. I guess all the strange, new smells were super exciting and he didn’t get time to calm down. At least that’s what I hope. He’s now 25.2kg by the way.
