"I have an old dog" by Denise Fenzi

This rang home with me now Bear is old and I find myself pootling along at his pace. I give him more treats and all his favourite foods now and make exceptions for him that I would never dream of for the others. He's a grumpy old so and so but I don't mind and just enjoy what time I have left with him.

I don't know about this Doug was a bit like this but not much but Moo,. It's was very different. She made sure things went her way anyway and because of how she was right up until her last day she was making herself very present. She would send us of to work command breakfast and still steal stuff. Her mind did not slow really. Her body was still good I think I was very lucky. She was never so distant as this, and still very much the head of the household in her mind. I miss her so.

Some of this resonated with me. Sky’s short walks (she no longer goes on the walks with DH and Red) are more sniffing than walking. She has developed a few quirks - not wanting to walk on certain sides of a pavement; suddenly stopping and not wanting to move. In the morning now she has a wee but not the poo she has done regularly every morning. If as if she can’t be bothered. If we are having a busy morning, I take her in the garden and say ‘seek seek’ - this still excites her and she will move around and circle and then have a poo ? - it’s almost as if I have taken on responsibility for her functions - to try and keep everything going for her. She does get slightly excited when I get her lead but she has changed so much. She tolerates Red but won’t play anymore - Red has learnt to not bother her. She diesn’t Greet people like she used to but will acknowledge their hellos by slightly wagging her tail. It’s upsetting but it is what it is and I hope we have a few more years of her with us.
