Keeping everyone happy

Well this week has been trying but I've learned so much. Cupar growled at a human this week for the first time, a small human.( Toddler)

After putting separation of child and dog in place for the week, the weekend has arrived.

Daughter with two step children 3 and 7 years old, son with his children,7 and 10years old, to add to my great nephew,2 year old have arrived to visit their cousin.

Dogs have been walked and children have all went to park with their parents but OMG, how to work around 4 adults and 5 children in a small house with an elderly dog and a dog that doesn't trust the toddler. I arrived back from our walk with the dogs into a house of bodies, they seemed to be everywhere, I had then to get Cupar and take him through the melee without putting any pressure on him and the silly sod just wanted to play with the bigger kids, in Cupars world kids = ball chuckers and food givers, so he follows them everywhere but of course this can't happen this weekend as he has growled at a visiting toddler earlier in the week.

So now I have to not only keep everyone safe, I have got to keep everyone happy and that includes the dogs. Of course Cupar is being his usual self around my grandchildren and my own grown up kids can't see the problem.

Anyway this week I have learned something very important, 'reward the growl', I have read so much stuff on dogs growling at children and I'm as proud as punch my dog growled and ran away from the toddler, he alerted me who wasn't paying proper attention to his body language and I'm now listening. My dog won't be required to tell the child to P off, I will do it for him.

Definitely an inspiring post. I am just starting to understand myself how assertive I need to be on behalf of Joy at times, in a way that I hadn't felt with previous dogs.I don't know if this is because she's more cautious than my other dogs, or because I have more time to think about it now that I've retired, or if it's coming here and reading posts like this and talking to all of you ( probably a combination of all three) but I do find myself politely but firmly saying that Joy's had enough now and needs to be left alone and other similar things and it always feels like completely the right thing to do. Well done for taking control of a difficult situation. Hope the visit goes smoothly.

Thanks all for the lovely comments. My niece has been visiting my eldest daughter in the next Street a lot and the rest of the family invaded her house as well, so Cupar and Cassie have been left in peace.

My other daughter who's visiting with her 3 year old stepson, Cupar doesn't have a problem with him, although I'm being really vigilant and both child and dog are in the same room but with Cupar lying beside me.
Candy, like you I've never been assertive in defending my dogs before these two but like you most of my dogs 'seemed' happy enough with all the kids I've had in and out over the years, Cupar is more sensitive but I do wonder if I just never saw the distress of all past dogs before and like you I do believe that not working full-time and my dogs being my life, as all my kids are grown. The Internet has opened up a world to me that was previously out of reach. So my dogs now are benefitting from all of the above.
