Lady - Starting to Feel Her Age

Poor girl - she's going through the wars at the moment. She was 10 in September and now has significant arthritis in both elbows, a touch of sciatica, and more fatty lumps than you can throw a stick at. Her history is she has elbow dysplasia diagnosed and operated on when she was two and a bit years old. This was successful but it was a matter of when, not maybe, arthritis would set in.

She got six really good years I'm pleased to say. She worked on a shoot in the winter and did normal dog stuff the rest of the year. Arthritis gradually started to rear it's head from 8 onwards. Cartrophen worked well for a couple of years but now she's on permanent Metacam. Also very recently her sciatic nerve has started to give trouble with the occasional loss of the back legs. Our vet checked her over about a week ago and declared her fit except for her elbows and the touch of sciatica. The fatty lumps are all superficial and nothing to worry about. Weight just about spot on at 29kg - I might drop her another kilo.

With hindsight I should have stopped her or at least slowed her down on walks recently. For the last few days she's been like a young dog again doing zoomies and honing around in puddles etc with the occasional plunge in the river. Today, squeezing under a low stile she yelped and then couldn't walk. Her right front elbow had given way. I had to carry her most of the way home so now we are both jiggered - her elbow, my back!

I've just got back from the vet. She thinks it's probably just an arthritic flare-up but just possibly a fracture, although she thinks that unlikely as Lady will put weight on her leg. So I've got to bring her back for an x-ray if some additional pain killers haven't worked by tomorrow. She's now on Gabapentin.

So that's the progression thus far. I tell you it breaks my heart to see her in pain. Fingers crossed that she gets relief. I'll take her out to her favourite wood later. Not to walk. Just to do what she has to do and we'll sit together by the car and watch the world go by.

It is difficult watching them slow down. Casper has arthritis in back and hip. He had real trouble earlier this year, and we were really worried for him. Luckily we have a fab rehab vet who worked her magic ( plus he dropped half a kg). He is so much better right now, although I am conscious it will catch up with him at some point. Is Lady on any supplements? Yumove Plus or Advance really made a difference. He is also on Golden Paste as I just add that to the kong mixture these days.
I do hope some rest and a change in meds makes her feel a bit more comfortable x

I truly do empathise @David . The Lab I had before Sam suffered with arthritis , its so hard when the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak . I remember someone telling me that " They will stop if they are hurting too much " Well , sorry but this didnt apply to Tess . Yumove is doing wonders for Nelly , her joints were all shot , still are I suppose, but she would have been much worse without the supplement . Hoping Lady will improve with the pain killers , bless her x

I have her on green lipped mussel. I'll have a look at the ones you are using.

Aww poor girl. :( Old age sucks for all concerned, that’s for sure. Hope your back is ok.
Back a bit sore but will be fine - thanks. Carrying a Lab is like carrying a very loose sack of potatoes! %)

Oh @David, I am so sorry to hear this about Lady. Much of what you say strikes a chord with me regarding Sky. I hope the painkillers relieve her pain and it’s not a fracture. It’s so hard when arthritis sets in. Sky has loads of fatty lumps too.

Thanks all. Just part of becoming an old dog but maybe a bit early. She seems comfortable now but still has a massive limp. I thought it would be good to post the progression of her arthritis. We got her when she was six months old so have no clue about early puppy time, but it's been a progression in other ways too with all her antics and other stuff, firstly on the "other" forum and now here. Golly! - don't they just get right down deep into your soul.

I’m so sorry. When they yelp in pain and then refuse to move, yes that is heart breaking. I certainly can’t pick up Snowie. But I found I could help him walk by holding a towel under his rib cage like a sling, taking the weight off his feet.

I hope the pain meds work their magic.

Have you tried laser treatment? Snowie had it for his back and it really seemed to work. My vet also recommends acupuncture, although we didn’t have much success with it for Snowie.

I think she's getting over the acute pain. Definitely not a fracture as she's limping much less this morning. I got a pain killer down her about half an hour before taking her out and we then managed to get to the first field so she could do what she has to do. There was a pause half way (it's only about 100 yds to the field) but that could have been objecting to the rain. She was walking much more freely on the way back indicating it's just an arthritic flare up rather than anything more serious. Short walks only for a bit. Actually we are off on a cruise up the Rhine next week so Lady will have some enforced rest in kennels.

The funniest thing was giving her the pain killer wrapped in Brie this morning. She was snoring and fast asleep when I held it to the end of her nose. She kind of just ingested it without noticeably waking up and then carried on snoring. :D

Feeling much better about the situation this morning. Many thanks for the support.
