Librela - a new option for pain relief for dogs with osteo arthritis

Strange, I wonder if he could have anything like a polyp further down his throat, hence the drinking & throat clearing maybe trying to shift it.
Could it be mild laryngeal paralysis? Lilly has it and apparently its common in labs?
Well I hadn't considered either of those. When he goes in for his PRP treatment under GA at the end of the month I will get them to have a good look around his mouth and throat.

Good evening Labrador friends.
mess very interesting to read peoples thoughts and observations on their pets and sorry to the lady who lost her fur baby. I found your post after wanting to read people’s experience with this new drug.
I have had my 6 year old collie on librella for three months now and have noticed a big improvement. She has osteoarthritis in her shoulders and front legs. She was hesitant to run at the park and just wasn’t herself until we found this drug. She has no limp and I wouldn’t think there is anything wrong either now. However my vet and physio advised to keep her on loxicom along with librella and You move.
I have also moved my 10 year old collie to librella. He has osteo in his front legs and paws. So much so his paws are turning in where he has been trying to compensate for the pain. I have seen a marked improvement also and not licking at his paws like he used to when he thought he could lick them better.
I’ve been told they are having supply issues here so that’s a concern but wanted to ask if anyone is also using the NSAD along with librella?. My oldest collie has had cartrophen injections which which worked for a while but now we are trying librella which is so far so good. Kidney function check recently and nothing reported. Thanks in advance.

Hi All, I don't have a Lab but I do have a 10yr old Chow Chow with advanced OA who has been on Librela for 5 months. Just thought it may be of interest if I told her story. Gemma ruptured her cruciate ligament at 8 months old, the start of all her problems. She went to an orthopaedic specialist for a repair, he used the MMP (Modified Macquet Procedure) surgical technique to stabilise it. It was completely successful and she had no more trouble until she was 7yrs old when we noticed that she was uncomfortable on the leg and was not using it as she should. Back she went to the specialist where after X-Rays and a camera investigation they discovered that the meniscus in her knee had become 'folded over', can happen after ligament surgery as angle of knee is altered. Anyway that was repaired but whilst taking x-rays discovered that she had severe OA in the knee, also, but not as bad in other knee, both hips and one elbow. Not good news. She has since had Aquamid once (silicone based lubricant) injections to both knees and also Platelet Enhancement Therapy 3 times. The PET is expensive and only lasts about 6 months. She is also on Yumove Advance (supplement) and Galliprant (OA targeted anti inflammatory). We tried cartrophen injections and K-lazer therapy but couldn't see any noticeable difference. In March 21 my specialists' nurse telephoned me to tell me about Librela. Made an appointment at my vet and she had her 1st injection on 1st April 21 she has just had her 5th today. We are pleased to say that we have noticed a considerable improvement in her. It has by no means turned her into a puppy but she now sleeps less, eats better, moves more freely and is more interested in other dogs and in going for her walks. She is no longer lame in her elbow and she is using her back legs when she get up from lying down. We also noticed her playing by herself in the garden with a ball, rolling and jumping around, something she hasn't done for a very long time. It was such a pleasure to see her happy, it makes you realise how unhappy she actually was. As it is such a gradual deterioration you don't really notice. So for us Librela is a success for the moment, only time will tell if it continues. We are continuing with the Yumove Adv but I am considering trying CBD oil and perhaps then we can forego the Galliprant! My vet got me to fill in a questionnaire before she started the Librela (Liverpool osteoarthritis in dogs) load-b-editablepdf-initlvisit-2017.pdf (siriusvet.com) it was devised by Liverpool University and it is very good at giving you a starting point, you can then do it every month to see if there are changes. I get my husband to answer the questions as an unbiased observer. I would recommend filling it in. Unfortunately her insurance renewal for this year was 2k and they have now excluded her leg issues, so she is now not insured but the 2k will hopefully go a long way towards her ongoing treatment.

I to do not have a lab, but have two dogs on Librella, Teddy and Trouper, brothers aged 15 . They had their first injection April 2021 and Trouper whose hips were very bad, responded within days, he was back to playing with his squeaky toys in the garden. Some would say Trouper was a lab, but his daddy was a cocker spaniel crossed with a beagle and his mum was a very pretty cross breed. Teddy did not react the same as his brother but both dogs had their second injection in May, it was a joy to see Trouper so happy, Teddy showed moderate improvement, meaning he was walking better and not panting at night. Teddy had been on metacam long term but had a gastric bleeding ulcer.
Both dogs take hemp oil twice daily and were taking this prior to Librella. The vet said there was no problem continuing with the Hemp Oil. Teddy goes for his 4th Librella on Monday. Trouper, three weeks ago, developed a blood shot eye that was bulging slightly. Antibiotics and, drops then tests for glaucoma and ulcers, an MRI scan took place within two days and Trouper had a tumour in the nasal cavity which had spread to the orbital socket and was going through the nasal plate to the brain. I write this because I was able to give Trouper 3 good months, thanks to Librella.. Two weeks after diagnosis on July 30th we had to say goodbye,
I use Organic Hemp Oil which is for dogs.

Hello to you all. I do not have Labradors but one of my dogs, Larry eight years old Yorkipoo is on Librela and has just had his second monthly injection. When he was a puppy my then local vet messed up his FHO operation which was for a genetic hip problem. Several months of pain later, this initial operation was corrected by a specialist vet once it was established the original surgery had been performed badly, and not because my dog was ‘an attention seeker’😡as the first vet told me at my many visits back to his surgery😡. Anyway, Larry quickly recovered from corrective surgery and has lived a very active and healthy life until earlier this year when he suddenly became unwell. There was no apparent illness and he did not limp, so he had exploratory surgery and the lovely young vet identified OA in the hip. Of course, this is no surprise to us but what was so shocking is that he presented as generally very very unwell but with no limp. All the pain killers you mention were tried but with no success prior to the exploratory surgery, and thankfully his blood work was all fine at this time. Once the severe OA was identified the vet suggested Librella and Larry was immediately back to his mischievous self, thank goodness. He had the second injection one week ago but his condition had not deteriorated before this. I highly recommend this treatment and I just hope it continues to be effective🤞. I raw feed and have added more specialist supplements and oils for OA to Larry’s diet and will follow good OA lifestyle advice alongside the treatment. Please feel confident to try this in your lovely Labs as it has really saved the day for is. I have to say, my vet did not tell me this was a new treatment!! I would happily take part in the research one of the contributors mentioned. 😊

Welcome to the forum @Sue, your experience is very useful to read, though I am very sorry to read about Trouper, but as you said, his last three weeks were good. I give my dog CBD oil which I imagine is the same as Hemp oil? Thank you for posting.

@LadyBigFoot, thank you as well for finding Liberal so helpful for your dog, it gives me hope for my dog as he cannot take any pain killers, well he might be able to take paracetamol. So sorry for the experience your poor pup had with first vet.

When I went for the weigh in for Hunter ( 2 kg to be lost - OH blamed me of course!) I decided not to book the Librela just to be sure, as he may have "overdone it" with the dog-walker and running after Charlie the teenage poodle. For a few weeks I have kept him on small dog walks. on leash and stopped him playing with the Covid puppy/teenagers. I think he hated the limited playing the most. However this has only slighty helped and in general his pain (OA in his elbows and just poor joints all over) has increased the last 2 months and many other dog-walkers have noticed that he is much slower and has a slight limp. Yesterday he had the Librela injection. He has just thrown up all his food (damn you golden paste!) over my fitted door mat. I don't think that this is a side effect, as the cat pooh he snuffled this morning could be the cause.
I have not find many young dogs using Librela so we will see what happens. We have tried infrared and sonic therapy but it only had short term effects and I need a long term solution for my beloved chocco idiot.

Thought it would be good to give you an update on Smithy. He is now two weeks past his second Librela jab. The Tramadol is down from 300mg a day to 150 and the Carprieve down from 100mg to 75. He is on such good form I am a bit scared to change anything else and haven't managed to get hold of my vet yet to discuss further which to cut down next. He is loads brighter, sound as a pound, you couldn't tell he had been quite lame in front. His hind legs are still weak and a bit of a worry although the fact that he is a happy dog is the main thing so I do feel I have achieved what I set out to do which was make his old age comfortable and enjoyable. We still do hydro therapy once a week and see the physio once a month (that's Smithy, not me !). Also do exercises at home to help strengthen his muscles behind. Every little helps I tell him ! I gather there are trials ongoing for a human version of Librela so greatly looking forward to that being released so I can get it and throw all my pills away ! I know we are lucky and this drug doesn't work for all dogs but so far, for us it's looking good  :hearteyesdog:
