Librela - a new option for pain relief for dogs with osteo arthritis

Yes it's difficult to get at the moment. I spoke to my vet about it for Rory in a few years. He can't tolerate most meds so we're hoping he can have this drug. The vet confined that he should be able to have it

We had been told to expect a delay after injection three, but have gone on to have injection four and five at regular four-weekly intervals after all. Existing patients are being prioritised.
Spot on. When I spoke to our surgery yesterday they informed that only existing clients had access to Librela. They are building a wait list for new patients once supply becomes available.

Hey all. I was just doing some research on Librela for my choccy lab when i came across this forum. Ive just been reading through and it all looks super promising! (Other then the lack of it at the moment :|)

My labrador, Penny is now 12. She has suffered with Osteo Arthritis for many many years. She was put on Gabapentin a few years back for the pain management and at first it worked miracles she went from walking on 3 legs most of the time to rarely limping! But unfortunately Gabapentin has quite a few side affects. And upping her dose after recently noticing a decline actually made her more wobbly (due to the gabapentin). I used to work at a hydrotherapy center so of course she has been going there when i can take her for only small swims. (We arent taking the treadmill route as that is too weight bearing for her) plus she thoroughly enjoys swimming so its also something for her to get excited about as she is struggling with only 5 minute walks at the moment. We dropped her Gabapentin dose back down to her usual dose and she went back to normal (ish - still slow) for a few weeks along with hydrotherapy and a physio giving us exercises to help build her muscles back up. But now she has gone backwards again, shes limping all the time, shes wobbly and very very slow on a walk which is heartbreaking to watch coz this girl LOVES her walks and having to leave her behind while i take my younger dog is so sad. She is still her usual perky self but i worry eventually not being able to go on walks with us will affect her mental health. I want her to enjoy her last few years, not be in pain! My mum has just bought a pushchair for her... which will be interesting keeping her in it!

I am going to ring the vet tomorrow with my fingers tightly crossed they have some available in hopes this will help her walk again even just for 10 minutes! I've found this forum really helpful and has given me a lot of hope. 🤞🤞🤞

I do want to ask from you guys whos dogs have actually been having the injection whether there are any side effects! The last thing i want to do is cause her more harm. I saw someone put about her poor doggy that died shortly after taking it. So i wondered if we know of any definite side effects from the librela??? Or if there is anything else i should know (tips, advice?) before i start her on this if they have some!!

Hunter is a, much younger dog and we have not noticed any side effects. He was sick the next day but I think that was the cat pooh he snuffed.
We have seen a big change this week. It sounds as though you are doing lots of positive things to help Penny feel comfortable. Do you give her supplements as well like Yumove or golden paste?

Hi @Zoe A , I posted a bit earlier on this thread that anecdotally, I had seen an increase in drinking water and licking. The drinking I'm really not sure about, but the licking is driving us mad, it can go on for what feels like hours through the night. Often he's licking the bed covers, as well as any human skin he can get in contact with.

However, it could just be that it's a comforting action when he's a bit sore and nothing at all to do with the Librela. If you are on FB you could try the Librela experience group, the only thing is it tends to be just one off posts so you don't get to read the ongoing sagas of dogs who have had multiple injections and how they have fared over the long term.

Update on availability: phonecall from vet last Friday to say Monty might not get his September jab ( due around the 23rd) until early October due to a delivery issue ( rather than a lack of supply). Let's see.

Thank you! That’s so great to hear that you’ve seen an improvement!! I think we have just about tried everything under the sun for her! Yes we have used golden paste for years it’s great stuff!

Thank you for sharing that! I can imagine how annoying that can get. But I suppose as long as it isn’t life threatening it’s worth it! I guess as it’s a new drug it’s hard to tell what’s related and what’s not! When I ring the vets tomorrow I’ll be asking for a list of possible side effects and I’ll be sure to post here what I find out!!

I’ll definitely check out that Facebook group thanks a lot!!

I hope it doesn’t take too long for Monty to get his jab! 🤞🤞

The general consensus seems to be that as a monoclonal antibody, there's no real reason for Librela to cause a reaction. But like with everything, I guess there's always a risk. And many dogs on Librela are older with other health conditions, so odd symptoms may have happened anyway regardless of Librela, which is just turns out to be coincidental. No doubt there's lots of erroneous links being made. But it's clearly made a big difference to so many dogs - unfortunately not that much for mine, but I'll take the small benefits- I think it's definitely worth pursuing with your vet if you can get hold of it.

Keep us updated!

Just a quickie as I dashing out for an appointment. My Lab cannot take pain medications, so he has 5mg Prednisolone every other day and 3 drops of CBD oil twice a day and an equivalent to YouMove. He is doing well, has bad arthritis in his left hind hock and did have problems with his shoulders, the shoulders seem completely better. He runs around when out, at home he can be stiff in the evenings and doesn't put full weight on that leg, but doesn't limp when out. Strangely enough, swimming makes his leg much worse!

Hi there, I wonder if anyone can help. My vet has suggested that my arthritic dog should have Librela, however he can't get any and I wondered if anyone knew how to get some? I know only vets can buy it, but I thought if I an find some then he can order it. My poor dog is in so much pain, and I'm desperate! thanks

Hi @Mollylabs

Viovet - link below - appear to have it in stock - but you'll need a prescription from your vet first to buy it. I know some people in the UK are administering it at home, but I'm not sure under what circumstances.

I am also speaking to our vet this week about the Librela injection for our 10 year old Lab. Hope this isn’t too ridiculous a question but will the injection target his left elbow where the arthritis is?

Hi Natalie…
interesting to read that you have seen an increase in drinking water and licking. My dog Alfie, is 14 and on his 4th injection. He is just having bloods done, as have noticed an increase in his water intake and urinating too (which equates , input v output🥴)
So far, the bloods have come back fine, with only a slight elevation in his kidney function but nothing to worry about. However two nights running he has wet in the house, and this isn’t Alfie at all. He will normally bark, if he wants out during the night. He also licks quite a bit, but this hasn’t increased since being on Librela. Now waiting on the next lot of blood results.

Librela shortage News. Interesting to read about all the different reactions people's dogs have had. I was due to take Smithy for his 5th Librela injection but the vet tells me they can't get it which is a bitter blow as he has been doing so brilliantly well on it. Together with the hydro and physio and the bits of physio I can do at home every day, Smithy is definitely getting a bit of muscle on his hinds. He's put on a bit of weight and the vet thought it was due to him muscling up a bit. His diet hasn't changed and we're walking a bit further than before so I hope he's right. I read somewhere that it doesn't do any drastic harm if the monthly injection is delayed......but how long are we talking ? I've tried all the online places and they haven't got any and don't know when they will be supplied. My next port of call will be Zoetis, the manufacturer, to see if I can get some definitive information. Anybody else had this problem and if so, how has it impacted the dog's movement ?
