Maxx recall

Echo the lead on/off advice. We’re still developing this, but I started doing a single click noise (like you would for a horse) before clipping the lead on Kipper, followed by clip on - decent treat. He now waits to have his lead put on when I click, knowing there’s something tasty coming, and it avoids any awkwardness with clipping on. Plus if it’s a rush job (e.g. strange dog appears, or something we want to give space to) Kipper’s started listening to my click quicker than if I was trying to recall him at speed - my ‘urgent’ voice always makes him look for the interesting thing :)

You've had a lot of expert advice here Robyn, ( none from me, I'm amazed Monty recalls most of the time 😆), can you get Steve in board with it too, to get a plan between you? I believe in you and Maxx completely, he's such a lovely happy boy!

Thanks Natalie, yes one thing we absolutely agree on is that recall is massively important. Given Maxx's obsession with other dogs we are always anxiously looking around whenever we let him off lead in case one appears as he is likely to take off after it.

Monty is the loveliest dog I've ever met. You should be darn proud of how well you have done with him. I still have the few strands of his fur in my handbag waiting until I can toss them into Sydney Harbour in front of the Opera house :tail:

Oh God Robyn you've just made me well up reading that, thank you.
But all our dogs are shit hot amazing to each of us and yet not one of them is perfect, thank goodness. I look forward to the day Monty's genes arrive in Sydney harbour. 😁

So glad to hear you're feeling better about it! Maxx is very clearly a dear, loving and intelligent boy, so I'm sure it will be possible. Just to echo what many others with more experience than me have said, on walks with Joy, infact for most of the time, I just try to be The Most Exciting Thing In The World! I find this works better than anything else. However, I have now retired and have far less demands on my time, so it's much easier than it was with previous dogs, and Joy's recall and general behaviour is the best I've ever had in a dog. I know without a doubt that this is because of the time I've been able to put in with her. What I'm saying is don't beat yourself up if you don't get it all perfect. Recall is pretty important for the sake of safety, but you don't need to start jumping through hoops. As long as you and Maxx can live safely and happily together, that's surely OK. All the very best to you!

Was thinking about you yesterday and Maxx and recall. Actually it then ended up me reflecting on my training with Red and how sloppy we have become during lock down. I think we have fallen into that ‘same old’ pattern on our walks and I have allowed her to do way more sniffing than usual so lesson to self - it’s always good to sharpen things up.

Secondly, Sky had the most rubbish recall. She was my first dog and I was totally naive about training. We missed a ‘window’ of opportunity getting her at 5 months then not doing much training (I worked full time in a very demanding job and F was working hard too). I honestly don’t know on reflection how she turned into the most fantastic dog. She certainly gave us plenty of heart stopping moments during her life but actually she was such a fantastic dog. Maxx is too.

Pride comes before a fall. 4 days of awesome achievements but today Maxx was a total mutant teenage sh!t - recall? I don't think so thankyou very much. He pulled like a steam engine and basically ignored us completely

Sigh
