This is a shot of him side-on. He has a massive chest and torso and he contours around his hips; but there is a bit of a tummy and the vet said he had to press hard to feel his ribs so a couple of kilos off would be good. So I'd like to get him to about 39.

Does anyone have any thoughts please?

Your analysis sounds good to me. He doesn't look like a barrel but if you have to press a bit hard to feel ribs then losing a kg or two is probably about right. His bones are obviously just 50% lead 😉😂

Weight is a funny thing. Luna has lead legs, for sure. She’s 27kg at the moment and nice and slim. Considering her size and build (she’s a moderate build for a show Lab) I’d have thought she’d be about 25kg at this body shape, but no. Little hippo :)

As @Jacqui-S says nice and slow. Do you weigh his food - if not, makes sense to do that - include all treats in what you decide is the right daily allowance. Good exercise regime which I am sure he has. Have him weighed monthly.

Sky is 2kg over what is ideal for her but she is a senior dog and her exercise isn’t what it was. In the past I have worked with vet nurses to get the weight off - nobody seems to be offering that anymore but at the time I found it very helpful and the vet nurse was always pleased with a slow weight loss of about 400g a month.

Max is a handsome boy. If it were me though, I would be wanting to see more of a tuck up of his tummy, especially at such a young age. Easily remedied though! How tall is he?

Pongooooooooo is ME ME ME ME ME!!!!! ME! Hi Maxx I hope you are as big as me so I can have someone like me to play with here!!!
@Rosie, it's been too long since we saw that video of you singing Silent Night to sleepy Pongo..... and it's nearly Christmas! Can we see it? Puh-lease? Since, y'know, there are people here who don't know who Pongo is!!!
