Medicating anxious dogs

Had Shamas out to pee last night, and a dog came towards us. Rather than hide him away in the house, I decided to use movement to give him a little exposure.

At the first sign of arousal, I uturned...walked 8 feet, then Uturned toward the dog. 3 seconds, then turn and walk away. We did this 4 times, Then ducked into the Legion parking lot to give him a good 50feet while she passed, where I stood him behind the dumpster for a few seconds to break line of sight before starting back for home.

Incidentally, he was wearing the same gear he wore during his consultation with the trainer( we always do pee breaks on the slip with a muzzle)---the difference is, when I put a slip lead on him, I leave it LOOSE, and don't apply pressure to the lead. I talk to shamas with my voice, and a quick flick of the lead. No pulling, tugging, or popping. Just a lead draped over his neck to tell him where I'm going.

I find it works really well when I'm working with both dogs at the same time. Shamas can feel my every change in direction, and Angel is on the headcollar. I'm still leery of taking off the muzzle to headcollar Shamas for walks....but with it hitting 30C yesterday....I'd like him to carry water bottles home to keep cool

Shamas went to a festival in the park yesterday :)

The place was full of dogs, and he wasn't at all bothered.

He wore his headcollar and muzzle ensemble, just to be safe...but he was in good form. He seemed to think it was a social hour and had to be reminded not to stop and greet other dogs.

We were approached by a staff member, who asked "your dog isn't Dangerous, is he?"

So I explained that he has anxiety, and the way the muzzle lays on his nose puts pressure on his face that he finds comforting. It's to keep him calm and happy.

She was content to take that explanation, given that he was in true Labrador form, calm with his tongue lolling, and eyes soft.

Shamas had just weighed in at 85lbs. Down from 89. I thought he was trimmer I'm at the vet right now because of Trixie having had Guardia and Shamas developed diarreah. So of course his stool just now is nice and firm lol.

I suspect that the diarreah is stress related because another family member and a pet moved out on the first plus a puppy moved in. And school finished so AB is home much more. And getting ready to move out angels owner was chaos. And the puppy cried at night for a week and angel was gone.

To top it all off, he ran out of meds over the weekend and went 24hours without. I usually have them a week in advance but we had lost track of pill counts. 16577334647938003822352211644542.jpg16577335579004157795293586020563.jpgfirst pic is in full gear. Second is after I took it off so the vet can see him. The muzzle is handy I'd she wants it
