Meg

Oh she does look a lovely dog. I admire the kennels for taking so much care, though it must be exceedingly frustrating for you having to wait.

My daughter had a rescue dog, they just brought her over and literally just dumped her, even though my daughter said she was going to Spain in a day or two, so a neighbour had to look after her. This poor little dog developed the most dreadful kennel cough I have ever seen and I had to take her in my car to the vet, terrified my dogs would catch it.

I think we are definitely top of the list. I don't mind waiting, but it gets harder the more you bond. The "easier" option here is to go for a foreign rescue, there's a lot of Spanish and Romanian dogs come here and yes, you pick it from a photo, they arrive and off you go...or fail. That said, we have a few a dog training and they are wonderful dogs, you get out what you put in - same for all dogs.

We plan to go Saturday and Sunday, and find out then when we can take her - still need a home check!

History-wise, I THINK she was brought over from the UK by an inexperienced family with small? children. She possibly snapped at a child and they didn't know why or what to do. She was assessed by 3 different trainers who all said the dog was fine, but they were not confident with her so gave her up. She has been to flyball with her previous family, so they obviously were embracing dog ownership, but have panicked.

I also think she has been hit or chastised, on our first meet, she jumped/lunged toward OH (she is said to be reactive with strange men), the staff member pulled her back on her lead and Meg sat and flinched. Staff had not seen that before, but it was very clear - we all noticed. Since then we have noticed she doesn't like OH putting his hand over her head, or petting her head but she's fine with me. Maybe her previous home had a man who reacted with a slap to the head? No matter her history though, we will just work with the dog as she is.

Oh, good luck for your OH today with Meg. It will be a big test being just the two of them. I wouldn't read too much into the head thing - lots of dogs dislike having their heads touched; it's really quite a confrontational thing to pat dogs on the head, even though we do it instinctively as a nice gesture. So if she's a bit on edge with him being a man anyway (and, again, that's very normal and doesn't mean she's been mistreated by a man - men just tend to be scarier by their physical size and movement patterns) then that would explain why she is uncomfortable with his hand approaching her head.
It's horrible to see them flinch, but it's not necessarily the sign of mistreatment. I got a long (50-70cm) beef scalp chew out for each of the dogs the other day and Shadow cowered away from it as if he'd been beaten with one. Errr, no. Ridiculous dog.

You're going to have such an exciting weekend with her. Please try to get pictures of Coco and Meg together if you get the chance :)
