Meg's Vaccinations

She is booked in for 13th September. They have suggested some anxiety medication. Give one dose the night before, then another dose 2 hours before her appointment. I didn't ask what it was, I will call them a week before to order it. Last time they were opposed to medication, I guess it's all different staff now. If it works, then I think it'll be best all round. We have the first appointment of the afternoon so hopefully quiet.

Good luck and let us know how you go. I'd be interest to know what meds she has and how she reacts.

Ella has both Trazadone and Gabapentin before vet visits and it does help but she's still a mess.

I took Meg in to weigh her today. I waited until surgery was well over so there was no-one there. I asked the receptionists not to approach or engage with her and we managed very well, sitting nicely on the scales (19.75kg). Because it's so hot today, the door was wedged open so she didn't feel trapped. I let her walk around the waiting room & examine the shelves of toys & food and she poked her nose into the examination room. Then she sat while the receptionist recorded her weight and went to sort the drugs out with the vet. I decided to put her back in the car before she was overwhelmed. Proud of my little scaredy girl.

I came out with some gabapentin - to be taken the night before, and then again 2 hour before her appointment and some trazadone, also to be taken 2 hours before. Same meds as Ella, so will be very interesting to see how we go.

Good luck xx

The only thing I find with Ella is that she is completely zonked out for the rest of the day. When I spoke to the vet about it, he said it's the result of her fighting the effects of the meds, so when she finally gives up at home, she's exhausted. She bounces back by the morning though.

Today was V Day. She had her 1st dose of Gabapentin last night, wrapped in goats cheese (yumm) and "turkey ham" (yuck). Then her second dos with the trazadone at noon today - again in cheese & ham (Coco got blanks).

After about an hour she became more dozy than usual, sleeping out in the hall in her bed, ignoring me & Coco, going about our business.

We went to the vets for 2pm, and the vet came out to see us on the pavement. I still had the lead & she asked me to hold her head (we've been here before, it doesn't work) then she just tried to stick her. No getting to know her. No gentle conversation. Meg twisted around and went for her (Meg was muzzled thankfully). I explained what the previous vet did. So she said OK and agreed to take the lead, but said I'm not doing it out here in case she slips out of my grip onto the road - fair enough - and she marched Meg into the surgery, and straight through to the consulting room. She was talking kindly to her no and Meg was compliant and went in with her, no bother. I stayed in the waiting room & I could hear her chatting to Meg - and the odd snarl & growl. The receptionist called down for a more experienced receptionist and she went in to the consulting room to assist. They were still chatting to Meg then several mintes later they were telling her how good she was, and it was done.

I'm not convinced the medication helped, but maybe it did, I mean they did get her vaccinated. I left them home alone this afternoon from 2:30, she's totally zonked out now at 5:15 ( but she'll still bark out of the window if called upon but Coco).

A thing that really annoyed me, the 1st receptionist said "oh we don't have an up to date weight" - but I came in last week, weighed her and asked them to record it - which they appeared to do. She also said that there was no note on her records to say she was very nervous, even though I've spoken about it to them 3 times in the last month, and she has been seen 4 times before for routine vaccinations and at least once for her vomiting problem (which I sorted myself in the end).

Well at least it's done for another 12 months.
