Poor Merly has had diarrhea at night for three days. Since he seemed fine in himself and was eating and drinking normally we didn't worry about it (except that he kept us up at night needing to go into the garden several times). However, this morning we found he had sicked up a clump of grass, and after our morning walk he drank some water, was sick again, and then sort of collapsed on the floor. Although he did manage to get up after a while, I was quite concerned about him as he was obviously in discomfort so we managed to get an appointment at the vet's and took him round shortly after they opened.
Turns out he has a bacterial infection in his gut, which was causing gas and was likely quite painful. He was given an antibiotic jab, and medication, and needs to go back on Thursday and again on Saturday. Poor lad, he still doesn't want to eat anything, but he has had water and hopefully is now on the mend.
We have had a lot to do with our vet recently, as poor Merly has also had an obstinate ear infection, which has involved weeks of cleanings and antibiotic drops, and weekly vet visits. Hopefully he will now be on the road to recovery, and I will no longer feel that the vet's surgery is our second home.
