I have discovered three problems with Toffee

1. The weeing, he could get a gold medal in wee . He goes outside - wees - comes in and immediately wees, then wees again. Goes outside - doesn't wee - comes in - doesn't wee for ages, then wees four times in quick succession. He wees on the floor, on the carpet, on the fireplace, on the kitchen mat, on newspaper, in his bed, in Ripple's bed  , everywhere.

2. Ripple is finding it hard to contain his excitement when playing with him, and is suddenly going over the threshold, which at the moment we are struggling to control.

3. Me and OH are so entertained by him (even watching him sleep :) ) that we're getting hardly anything done that doesn't relate to dog things  . And yesterday when I decided I had better iron some clothes, my iron colluded by promptly giving up the ghost.
I come from a family where doing nothing was virtually considered a sin, so after a week of Toffee watching I'm beginning to feel guilty. But, as OH keeps reminding me, we are actually doing something by being with Toffee for the first weeks of his life with us. So I'm trying not to care about the kitchen floor, the hoovering, the weeds in the garden, in fact the whole untidiness of everything :happy:.

You are doing great. In answer to your problems,
1. None of us have an adult dog that wees in the house, this is temporary and you'll get through it
2. Ripple is a star and will work out well in the end, he's just super excited at having a little brother.
3. Housework is boring. Overrated. No one died from a shirt being un-ironed. Toffee will be a puppy for a very short time so I agree you should delight in every second of him if you can. Plus you have a beautiful floor which will surely hide all dirt until at least October.

Perhaps problems was the wrong word - really just a tongue in cheek post. But you've all echoed what I know about the mess, despite the niggling doubts from years of my Mum telling me sitting down was wrong.

And Toffee is a delightful pup, he's so lovely, and bright as a button. OH is so taken with him it's unbelievable (in fact I might feel a bit jealous :D ).

That’s one of the bonuses of having a puppy!

“Sorry my house is a bit of a mess, I’ve been so busy with the pup...”

No one can say a thing. Unless you’re like me..

“Jen, your dog is now 2 years and 4 months old.. you’re just lazy” :wasntme:

I wish I could have enjoyed those young puppy days. They do go so quick and I look back at those adorable photos but remember the reality for me. The joy my two dogs give me though makes me push those memories away and it was all so worth it. Enjoy Toffee as much as you can and ignore housework as much as you can ?.

In the last 24 hours we've had an interesting development on the wee front. Every time he goes out for a wee he does a little drop, gets loads of praise and a treat, then comes in and does a huge puddle on the floor  - OH (who is mostly in charge of wees) is getting a little frustrated :headbang: . I suggested he brought him in and then took him straight out again (that didn't go down well as it's raining here, but I thought it was a reasonable solution  ).

The pooing nearly always occurs on the fireplace behind his crate, so we've blocked access to it and he's now squeaking when he wants a poo so we are getting a chance to take him outside.

Definitely make the time to really enjoy the first couple of months, Pepper's coming up to six months now and he definitely seems more like a dog than a puppy. Still has the puppy mentality but just in a much larger body!

OK, so I am deffo not an expert, but are you managing NOT to make a fuss or react when he is widdling inside?
I found that so hard.
I guess the other thing is, don't reward/praise him if you suspect it is a "play" widdle and he isn't actually empty??

I don't think we are reacting, certainly not making a big fuss (although OH gets a bit fed up when Toffee whips the kitchen towel he was just about to use out of his back pocket :D ) , but I'm very conscious of dogs picking up unspoken cues.

This is a difficult one because he's definitely not empty, but then he has done something in the required place.

It's still very early days and I'm sure things will sort themselves out soon. I do think we're getting better at recognising the 'poo' signals, so that's something. The rain over the last two days hasn't helped of course, it's not very pleasant standing outside waiting for a wee in this weather.

But, on the whole, Toffee is a lovely little boy. He's quick to learn other things, sits for his food, watches Ripple's training sessions really intently and then we do a bit of training with him as well. I'm really pleased with him :) .

Does he go out for a wee with ripple? Will ripple wee reliably as certain points or on command? I used send the big ones out for a wee when I knew they needed to go, ask them to go and the pup would usually do it with or after them. He would especially like to copy Doug. It really helped Rory
