Nisha and Talía (Negreta and Lulú).... a journey.

the vet will hopefully come here rather than us taking her there. I can’t imagine it being possible for us to get her from here to there safely.
House visits for vets seem to be a pretty common thing in Spain. I had several visits for the poor terrified foster kitty I had (Señor Garfield). Thank goodness for that woman, as I couldn't touch that cat, let alone get him to the vet.

Hope it all goes well.

Does it seem to be bothering her? I’m just wondering if it’s worth investigating right now, and upsetting her so much if it’s not bothersome. I’m not trying to be insensitive, I’m being the exact opposite actually, just thought I’d ask the question. Those 2 have come sooo far....good on you and J! ❤

Does it seem to be bothering her?
Well, she’s struggling to wee. I don’t know if the two things are related or not. Same general area! But the struggling to wee could be a symptom of more profound kidney troubles, possibly organ failure due to leishmaniasis. A week of ABs hasn’t had any impact. Is she in pain? I don’t know. But if she’s got kidney issues then possibly - and if it is that, then the sooner she can be treated, the more likelihood for a positive outcome. We just can’t tell without veterinary intervention.

You can only do your best Fiona. Will she be sedated by the vet?
I can’t really see any alternative, but I don’t know what that sedation will entail. It needs to be something pretty robust to have any impact, but if there is a potential kidney issue, the vet may be disinclined to use anything too potent.
Does anyone have any experience with blow darts? 😬

I didn't want to say anything but now that YOU have said it, I've been thinking "Are blow darts really thing and can you use them on dogs?". I think they were using them on the wild pigs that invade urban Barcelona, so maybe there is a blow dart expert near you? 🤔😉

She looks so bright and healthy in that beautiful head shot you posted, I'm throwing all my Lambies at NO Leishmaniosis or at the very most a mild case that hasn't gotten into her organs.

I wonder if the wee issue could possibly have anything to do with her change in diet since she came to you. I've had bizarro things happen to dogs once they got out of a shelter or other foster situation and I've given them what I consider to be a better diet. It's like their bodies adapted to crap food and dirty water and when you give them the opposite, they have a period of falling to bits.

The problem is we have no history and so we don’t know if this is new or not. She’s always weed a lot when we’ve been to visit her, but all three of those kennel mates are scent markers, and we’ve never been able to see any sort of flow until recently. So maybe she’s been struggling with weeing for years. Maybe she’s had that lump for years. Maybe she’s fine with both, or maybe they are having a direct impact on her fearfulness. We don’t know.
Their poo has been firming up since arriving; all the dogs in the kennel have pretty chronic diarrhoea which I put largely down to stress. The odd squelchy one, but they’re having a lot of new foods so that’s not something I’m worried about as long as the trend is to firmer. I don’t know if it would be common for stools to become healthier and yet urination to become problematic at the same time due to change in diet 🤷‍♀️

The vet at the shelter where Carbon came from said the dogs there always had diarrhoea because they drank the water out of the puddles when it rained and then just sat there. I can't remember what he said it was, but something nasty in standing water.

And I agree about the stress, too. :pensive:

I would feel reluctant about using a dart, stronger tranquilliser as well I imagine.

Good to see Nisha is getting a wee bit more confident. Talia was so patient as you were throwing food for Nisha. Talia seems to crave affection.

Have you had time to speak to the vet yet Fiona?
I’ve just come out of a consultation with her. She has to get in a stronger sedative which will hopefully knock Nisha out very quickly. It’s a liquid which is normally applied to the gums which we obviously can’t do but hopefully it will work if we can choose the right food to lace so it goes in as she eats. Then she will give ketamine and do the necessary tests. It will probably be Tuesday before she can come.

How are the girls Fiona? Any more films for us xx
Sorry, I've been super busy recently and not processed any videos! The vet has been postponed until tomorrow, hopefully. We'll have to check in with her in the morning. I'm really, really hoping that it will all be OK.

Progress is slim at the moment. As expected, really. The burst of change as they settled in has been replaced with their "normal" and this is where things are really slow. Another reason for not posting, because I don't want to be boring!

On the other hand, I've been doing lots of little things with both of them, I have a Trello board filled with little training plans for various things.

With your prompting, I've just posted a short clip from a video I took the other day!

It’s lovely to see Nisha pottering around checking that she hasn’t missed any treats(?) in the background, rather than standing off and barking. She’s beginning to look more relaxed. :)

Oh, she barks plenty still! 😂
I’d just finished doing some feeding to the station with her, and there are bits which bounced off, so she snuffled them out before continuing with her shouts.
I’m starting to notice differences between her “conversation”, “feed me NOW, puny human!” and “get out of my space!” noises. There’s a lot of 1 and 2 going on, and that’s cool because I can train those out over time.

“feed me NOW, puny human!”
Well, as a Labrador person, you are well equipped to deal with this type of communication!

Really love your videos, thank you for posting. They have already come so far.

Different topic: I hate Trello. You use it voluntarily? We have to use it for work and it makes zero sense to me and clogs up my email box with a billion bot alerts every time a card gets moved. Argh!
