Nisha and Talía (Negreta and Lulú).... a journey.

It's strange having "not a Labrador" dogs. They're just not always interested in breakfast. Even Ginny has turned into somewhat of a Lab, I think from being surrounded by them all the time.

This morning I took their breakfast over and put it on their mats. Talia just watched me, and as I went to leave (we give them peace while they eat) she followed me. So I sat down on the step and she came up to me for ear rubs and butt scritches. I got a lick on my nose, which was lovely. That's obviously what she needed this morning instead of food .... but I don't think she knows she missed out on egg and yoghurt!

Do you think Talia is ready for more interaction? It must be difficult to decide, as Nisha needs her company and is finding trust more difficult.

I'm inclined to think that if we'd just dumped Talia into a home environment, she'd have been totally flooded but would have worked through a lot of her issues by now just from sheer weight of exposure. With the great strides we made early on, I was hoping that by now we'd have been able to take her out on short walks with the team and getting to see the world outside of their enclosure. But, as it is, we can't get a lead anywhere near her, and without that, she obviously has to stay where she is. I wouldn't split them up for more than a bit of a walk, as Nisha wouldn't cope, and she certainly wouldn't have managed in a home. And, anyway, it's a bit academic without being able to get Talia out!

Oh Nisha, poor poor baby. You're bang on with the eye gaze - she almost seems to sense your direct gaze before she looks at you, which I suppose she does. Like all of us, you can often feel someone is looking at you before confirming it. I love to see the progress - I think it's maybe easier from the outside - but I also feel your frustration. It must be so tricky to go at their pace, when their challenges they're having to overcome must make for very slow gains, compared to e.g. a puppy's development without any known 'non-standard' background.
