Oh no, I'm so sorry to hear this. I do hope that a way can be found for her to have the examination she needs without too much trauma and that the lump is benign. Poor girl and poor you. :hug:

I will definitely be trying sedatives and I think they will work better than they did with Nisha (can’t be any worse). I still have some ace and gabapentin from that period, so I’ll check with my vet when I make the appointment as to what’s suitable in this case.

With doing so well recently, it’s been my plan to try to get a lead on her and get her out of the compound, and I’m hoping that the very lightweight lead I’ve ordered will arrive tomorrow. I’m going to continue with that plan because there will be some inevitable manhandling her in order to get her to the vet, and if possible I want that to be outside of “her” space. I think it will do significantly less damage if I can get her to happily leave the compound with me. So I’m going to give it the weekend and see what happens there. I have to weigh up her physical well-being with preservation of her psychological state, for quality of life. I’m hoping a couple of days’ delay won’t make much difference: we don’t know how long the lump has been there, of course. It may be it was there all along.

To be honest, I’m not sure. It was the first time I’ve ever touched her underneath, so it was a light touch and relatively quick. I just felt a very strange mass at the base of a nipple, probably about the size of a golf ball, maybe a little smaller. But my hand didn’t linger or return to investigate, she’s not ready for that.
If she lets me, I’ll try again tomorrow, but it depends on how she’s feeling.

It could be a lipoma, even though it’s near a nipple…. Fingers crossed. And as you say, it could have been there for years.

Totally agree that a doggie’s mental state is just as much a priority as their physical state.

So sorry to hear about the lump. Snowie had a lump on his nipple. It was big and scary. And just suddenly was there one day. I mean, how did I miss it?? I give this dog rubdowns several times a day (most massaged dog in the world!). Waited a week to see what happened, then took him to the vet. She said it must come off immediately. Spent the weekend contemplating death. Results: benign. It was sent to a specialist for assessment and it came back with a special name, which I forget. Caused from mechanical trauma, most likely from scratching (he was going through an itchy period). I’m sorry we put Snowie through the op. It was an awful experience for him, the wound was very big to get good margins. We should’ve got a second opinion first.

Perhaps you can get a photo and send it to a specialist vet before going through any manhandling?

I’m so sorry for this @snowbunny , what a horrible situation - but keeping all crossed for getting her beyond her safe space for whatever handling is needed, and a positive outcome. I so wish she and you could get a break xx
