Off to the vets with Squidge

The rash never completely disappeared. The "fresh" redness did, but the little scabs never healed completely. It's not been that long since I started the treatments, so I know I need to be patient. I first noticed it in the spring, but assumed it was bug bites, kept spraying her with repellant and of course she was treated with Advantix then, too (she's not at the moment because the ticks aren't around now). It was at its worst in the heat of the summer, which is why I assumed heat rash. I put iced towels on her tummy, which she loved, and that seemed to help a bit. But when it continued even as the temperatures lowered, I realised it's unlikely to be heat rash and so started her on the prednisolone and cut chicken and beef out. The pred seemed to work really quickly, got rid of the fresh redness, but we've not been clear of the scabs. Maybe I should photograph it to see if it's just the existing scabs that are taking time to heal, or if there are fresh ones appearing. She gives it a chew from time to time, but it's not excessive enough to warrant a cone, I don't think. It's only once every few days.

That's a right pain. I've been going through a similar situation with Molly and am coming to the conclusion, through eliminating things bit by bit, that chicken is a significant problem for her.

Good luck with getting to the bottom of Luna's problem. Why does it seem the brown labs get these allergies/sensitivities more than the other colours?

Is it only in Spain she gets the rash? Bones used to get a summer rash on his tummy and under his arms, eventually it turned out he was allergic to certain grasses!
Scout has what Ive always assumed is a seasonal allergy. He gets itchy in the summer. He doesn't get a rash as such but in an evening can itch like crazy. I assumed it was grass like Karen's Bones (that doesn't sound right sounds like karen has itchy bones :giggl: ) This summer I noticed he'd hardly itched. That was until we had to start mowing the grass again. Up until the beginning of September the grass had hardly grown because of the hot weather so wasn't getting a weekly mow. Scout started to itch, not too badly, a day after mowing resumed. @snowbunny could something in the environment grasses or weeds, produce pollen or seed or something in the spring and autumn when the weather is, marginally, cooler or going to cool down.

That's really interesting, thanks Jac. I was trying to find something like this yesterday in fact! In the last batch of food I made, I used chickpeas. I was wondering if it was possible to have a reaction to lentils but not chickpeas. This article suggests that, yes, an allergy can be that specific and not necessarily apply to all legumes.

It's definitely possible it's environmental, but nothing has changed in the environment this last week. The weather has been consistent. And, assuming what I noticed in the spring wasn't insect bites and was this same rash, then it's been going all through spring and the hottest part of the summer, so it's unlikely to be a pollen, I'd have thought. I dunno. I'll keep going with the washing and the dietary restriction and see if I can clear it up. If all else fails, we'll be heading back to Andorra at some point and so will know then if it's environmental.

Funny, well not really, but I am just doing my anaphylaxis update prior to flu vac season.
It says only 5% of those with a peanut allergy will be allergic to other legumes such as peas, lentils and beans.
But 92%!!! of those allergic to Melon (Cantaloupe) will be allergic to other fruits - mostly watermelon, banana and avocado.
Who knew? Hopefully @Boogie at least.

Oh yes, I’m allergic to watermelon too, but I count that as a melon 🍉

@snowbunny, have you had Squidge checked for mites??? Our vet just sent out their monthly newsletter, and it happens to be about grass mites. Unfortunately it is in German otherwise I would copy it on here, but basically what it says is that some dogs have an allergic reaction to mites that can result in huge itchiness and even in blisters or swelling on the head.

Good thought, @Karen, I'll take her to get her tested. It won't be sarcoptic mites because all the dogs would have symptoms, but it's possible it's demodectic mites. I'm thinking it's unlikely, though, as she was treated with Advocate over the summer and that's effective against both types of mites, when she was still experiencing symptoms. Maybe there's another type I'm not aware of.

I'll definitely get her tested, but I'm still skeptical as it doesn't appear to be a seasonal thing (in that it started in spring, through summer and now into autumn) and I haven't seen anything that looks like mites on her skin. I haven't ever seen mites before, but I've looked closely for flea "dust" and she doesn't have that - I'd have thought I'd have seen the larvae whilst doing this. It's worth going back to my vet anyhow. I'll go next week when J is back again from Andorra. It's a challenge to take her by myself as she's so full of beans, so I have to concentrate on trying to keep her calm while he does everything else! The waiting room is tiny (about two metres by two metres of floor space) so if there are other animals waiting, it's tough to keep her calm.

Yes, I could do, but it's the paying and everything. I might risk it for a biscuit and take her tomorrow. If I can park outside, I can just chuck her into the car while I pay!

Although, on second thoughts, it's market day tomorrow and it's always rammed along that road then. Bah.

That is what I do with Finn after a vets visit. I make an appointment on line and make sure I am the first. After the visit I put Finn in the car and then pay.
