Op to remove lump on lower eyelid

Tomorrow Snowie will have a lump removed from his lower left eyelid. Here’s a pic.

In March/April last year, he had a procedure done on his cornea to treat a recurring problem. The opthalmologist used a device to keep his eye open, and afterwards I noticed a little black lump, kinda like a scar. It was very tiny. I have no idea if it was caused by her. Anyway, a couple of months ago, I noticed the lump seemed to suddenly have got bigger. I kept watching it, and last week we decided to have it seen by the same opthalmologist (she is the only one in our city). She said it was impossible to know what it is without sending it away for analysis. She said it looked inflamed and asked me to put cortisone cream on it these past few days to shrink it. Hah! Almost impossible!

She said she’s not worried, but she said if it grows too big then it can hinder his sight. And removal when it’s bigger means removing more eyelid. Now, hopefully, it’s small enough to remove without having to remove the eyelid edge. There’s also another tiny lump above the top eyelid, on the nose side. She’ll remove it, too. Nothing on the other eye, which is why I wonder if it was caused by an injury from the eye clamp she used last time.

Has anyone had any experience with such a lump in this location? Is there anything I should be concerned about? Post-op care to think about? I’m worried his eyelid will pull after the lump removal—she said she wants to remove a decent margin.

The worst part at the moment is no breakfast tomorrow!! Good thing we must leave home at 7am to take him there. But he’ll need a very early walk for his morning ablutions! My husband is waking up at 5.30 so he can take him!

Hi, Poppy had to have a small wart removed from her eyelid a year or so ago. First the vet just scraped it off under local anaesthetic but it grew back, so then she had to have a general anaesthetic and the wart was cauterized. It went very quickly and successfully, and they removed a wart from her leg while she was still under. There were no problems, and she recovered very quickly. Good luck for Snowie, I'm sure it will be fine! But I know you'll worry, and will be happy once he's back home with you.

No experience, @M.F. , but Pongo also has a lump just like that (on his upper eye lid) and we've had nearly exactly the same advice from the vet (i.e. not sure what it is, but let's remove it while it is small). I'm going to arrange a time to get it done very soon. So all Pongo's best wishes go to Snowie, and we'll be thinking of you both. Hope it goes really well!

We’ve dropped him off. Such a lovely vet, so friendly to Snowie. But we left to lots of demanding barking—wanted the treats that he’s used to getting at the vet!! Hopefully I’ll be able to pick him up early afternoon. With his extremely loud barking, the vet said she’d do him first! Wednesday is her theatre day.

There are a lot of glands around the eyelid…they can develop harmless tumours or cysts. When Obi had his recent lump, an eyelid gland tumour/cyst was a possible candidate (a meibomian gland tumour) though it turned out not to be that. But maybe that’s what Snowie has.

It’s very sensible to get this seen to while it’s so tiny. I’m sure all will be well and Snowie will be back to his handsome self in no time.

Vet just phoned. All is well. So relieved!! I have such a headache!! Snowie is pacing but not worried about the op site. The shaving has left him looking patchy—@Oberon lol might take some time to look handsome!!

She said she’d take him for a little walk and a drink and I must come to pick him up in 2.5 hours. She has to discharge him, and she was going back into theatre. It takes 30-40 mins for me to drive there, so unfortunately I couldn’t get there before her next op. I pity anyone there who is in bark distance of Snowie—deafening!! And I’m sure he’ll be feeling very indignant and confused (and possibly stressed) being kept in a cage.
