Otter's Journey....

Week 5 Post Op

To say this last week has been hard is an understatement! Off all her meds, more energy, lots going on in her head, and managing her compensating behaviours has been really tricky. Meaning, now she is less restricted in the house, has more space, more time outside and much less time in her crate she is being a bit silly at times. She is still a puppy after all! :dug::tail:

A notable change is her strength. She has physically changed a lot in the 5 weeks post op, ( she was also restricted exercise post injury period 3 weeks before.) There is a muscular deficit in her affected leg, however it looks to be catching up very quickly since we have increased her lead walking, I think we probably a little over the recommended 15 mins. We are also now working on back end awareness with her plus "sit to stand". We are still incredibly careful, the more serious rehab won't start until after the follow up appointment and when we started working alongside our wonderful rehab vet, so looking around the 8 week mark.

I am hoping that her skeletal growth is enough to see a real change in the tibial plateau of the affected stifle. Certainly it seems more robust to my eye. Her next appointment with the surgeon is in 2/3 weeks time. At that appointment he will take Xrays to measure the change in the angle, we are hoping to see some significant improvement. The effect of the op is very much like a "slow TPLO" without the invasive surgery. Success is based on correct positioning of the screw, and enough residual growth to effect change. Ultimately we want to remove any cranial thrust and therefore render the cranial ligament (still in place ) redundant.

So, here is a little video I took this morning. All I am doing is rewarding Otter for any movement backwards onto the bed - using her back legs to shuffle backwards and up. This is just helping her become "aware" about using her back end. The bed is a memory foam bed so a little "give". This surface provides a little instability, activating her core as well as the large bicep muscles. Going forward we will work on walking backwards, working with a perch and pivoting around. Targeting with back paws. :)

I love this, Kate :D I particularly love your style - gentle, consistent, steady - and sheโ€™s so QUICK! What a bright spark, she gets it so quickly then improves the game with the lid
Fab, thanks for sharing x

Talking about little puppies....

Otter at 15 weeks old, just a few before her accident...

Otter, 25 weeks old and 10 weeks since her accident, 6 weeks Post Op.

Otter almost not quite six months.jpg

Otter is growing well. Maybe a tad plump, but I think she is just about to head into her final growth spurt (she she has those cute knobbly bits on her front paws!

She is real pain in the ass right now. Quite a bit bigger, stronger and a challenge in more ways than one. We both love her to bits.

We are still on 15 mins lead walk, although I do drop the lead if I am 100% sure she really is going to just pottle beside me. Lots of work on rear awareness, and we have moved to backing up one rear paw at a time onto a wobble board. Other things we are doing now is large, slow, loopy figure of eights, leg weaves and pole weaves. Next week if all goes well Otter is allowed 5 mins off lead! The biggest problem we have funnily enough is Stoli is determined to sabotage our careful (to the point of paranoia...) attempts at rehab, by literally flying out of nowhere to have his zoomies! I now carefully check the coast is clear before venturing out with her.

The gang....on our first outside walk together yesterday. @Beanwood set off early, and we met them for the last 5 mins. Partly so that Otter could spot them at a distance and feel the joy, instead of trepidation.

Is she wearing a Copenhagen harness? (Orange goes so well with chocolate!) Oh my she has grown and her back leg fur has also grown back very well! She is simply beautiful and obviously so part of the Beanwood gang!
You will have to change the avatar again with her growing so fast!
That is one big snack bag you have there!

Happy half birthday Otter! 6 months old today....

The big dogs went out for a long walk this morning with @Mr Beanwood , so we had the house to ourselves for a few hours. To celebrate I let her have a large yogurt tub to finish, yummm! Then lots of fun training, back leg targeting, walking backwards and middle. Otter adores training! We are also seeing now her normal temperament coming through now she has more freedom to express herself naturally. s somewhat of a challenge. Otter has just 2 gears, high energy 100mph or fast asleep, I think she would be a challenging pup even without her injuries! :cat::facepalm:. I am now used to regular panic attacks, probably half a dozen a day. Even this morning I let her potter outside, no problem only I absently recalled her back...well you just can't do recall as Otter thinks that is the most exciting thing in the world (ironic huh?!) she stops everything and flings herself at you! I spot her bum tucking under and yelled "scatter!" in a slightly hysterical voice....jeez....:hungover:. Bad habits? She speed counter surfs....starts one end and zooms down to the other end....eyes bright and tongue eager. I barely have time to blink. She can't sit still for a second...calm pup? Settle? Oh that is going to be fun. I have more blurry photos of Otter than ones of her actually being still.

So here she is at 6 months old..... our spring loaded Otter....:hug:
