Week 5 Post Op
To say this last week has been hard is an understatement! Off all her meds, more energy, lots going on in her head, and managing her compensating behaviours has been really tricky. Meaning, now she is less restricted in the house, has more space, more time outside and much less time in her crate she is being a bit silly at times. She is still a puppy after all!

A notable change is her strength. She has physically changed a lot in the 5 weeks post op, ( she was also restricted exercise post injury period 3 weeks before.) There is a muscular deficit in her affected leg, however it looks to be catching up very quickly since we have increased her lead walking, I think we probably a little over the recommended 15 mins. We are also now working on back end awareness with her plus "sit to stand". We are still incredibly careful, the more serious rehab won't start until after the follow up appointment and when we started working alongside our wonderful rehab vet, so looking around the 8 week mark.
I am hoping that her skeletal growth is enough to see a real change in the tibial plateau of the affected stifle. Certainly it seems more robust to my eye. Her next appointment with the surgeon is in 2/3 weeks time. At that appointment he will take Xrays to measure the change in the angle, we are hoping to see some significant improvement. The effect of the op is very much like a "slow TPLO" without the invasive surgery. Success is based on correct positioning of the screw, and enough residual growth to effect change. Ultimately we want to remove any cranial thrust and therefore render the cranial ligament (still in place ) redundant.
So, here is a little video I took this morning. All I am doing is rewarding Otter for any movement backwards onto the bed - using her back legs to shuffle backwards and up. This is just helping her become "aware" about using her back end. The bed is a memory foam bed so a little "give". This surface provides a little instability, activating her core as well as the large bicep muscles. Going forward we will work on walking backwards, working with a perch and pivoting around. Targeting with back paws.
