Otter's Puppy Log

I mentioned the Zen face game earlier, basically reinforcing puppy for looking at my face. This is Julie Daniels demonstrating the early stage of the technique and rewarding the puppy for any tiny approximation of the desired behaviour. Great little game and no reason why this wouldn't be fun for any age dog. Steve Mann even uses this "focus on face" behaviour to train loose lead walking. :)

My name is Otter!:sun:

Earlier in the thread, I mentioned "Reflex to Name". You may have also noticed I am not really using her name much at all, or even teaching cues. Right now it's all about being happy, curious, confident and comfortable.

Looking back on previous puppies, the Beanwood gang now, what I have noticed is how I waffle on! Honestly, if I call Benson once I call him a hundred times! I don't really think it means that much to him either, well, maybe leave that lovely compost heap, my tuna sandwich, wooden spoon number 58...( pretty sure that one is an understatement! )My reflex is to yell "Benson! HIS reflex is to ignore it! I may as well be shouting "Rhubarb, Rhuuuubarb! For all the good it's done, probably be better off in some respects. So, for now, I am just using happy, chirpy sounds that mean good things....and when I do use her name, we do this in the context of a game :)

So we are a week into puppydom. We are both a bit ragged around the edges, she is literally on the go all day! She does have lots of downtime, and we are focussing right now on helping her wind down. Otter doesn't go straight into the crate after play, she has a little cuddle, a bit of zen face training, then a kong, plus her anco root which she loves. We then trickle treats while she is calm, but not asleep.

She is a funny wee thing too, when working with a large piece of bubble wrap, she grabbed it with glee and races off down the driveway with bubbles popping wildly!:inlove:

Benson is her buddy, she follows him everywhere! Bramble and Casper ignore her mostly, but happy enough when she is around, which actually I happy with, and equally happy that she doesn't bother them.

So photos to stop you lot nagging me!

She’s beautiful! I love that mischievous expression in her eyes. As for her ears, definitely competition for Spencer and Reuben (and she’s got Ginny’s Dobby look in the third photo too!).
