Otter's Puppy Log

Looonnnngggg day today with Otter! 5 am and she is BUZZING to get on with the day. My head is also buzzing, mainly because I am not quite awake. All attempts to settle her failed miserably. That is until I took a spare small comfy bed out of the large crate and popped it next to Casper's bed. She loves it! Today when tired, she has taken herself off to her new bed, especially anytime Casper is in his. OK...hands up she has me neatly wrapped around her wee paws! :sun: I think tomorrow morning, I will come down, let her out of her crate, then offer her the bed to have a snooze, maybe I will be able to catch up on some much-needed zzzzzs:sleepy:

Now doesn't she look comfy!:heart:

Next, on our agenda today was THE VET....so we bundled ourselves in the car and off we go, she isn't terribly happy in the car, OK...bit whiney, certainly not like Benson or Bramble who hit the snooze button as soon as bots are in the boot. Otter is certainly more cautious and edgy about things in general. She needs time to work stuff out, although loud noises, bangs, us moving around, TV....tractors, motorbikes don't at this point bother her. She is though, warier of humans.

Today we were in for her 10-week vaccinations. In we go, her little harness on and lead which she is happy to wear. I take the considered risk and have her on the floor. Allowing her to explore in her own time. Reassuring when needed. We are early at the surgery so very quiet. Shortly after we arrive, so does another little labrador puppy, a little red fox girl, she is the same age as Otter and adorable. Her owner has her bundled in a thick layer of puppy pads, towel in a cat basket. Otter quietly goes up to say hello, a quick sniff then back to me. Good girl! We have a little chat, and the new puppy owner proudly tells me she is from a world-famous sire called Paddy, and she has come all the way from Rotherham....OK...that's lovely I smile and nod. Yes, he continues. Working line? I ask...Oh yes, he replies, and she knows lots of commands already! Sit, Down.. and Stay...I smile again, he is obviously delighted with his pup and that's the important thing. He then comments on how obedient Otter is, what a good girl. It was an interesting observation on his part, as actually I haven't taught Otter any cues...none. I park that thought to mull over later. Anyhow the vet called us, so we said goodbye.

I let Otter follow me, her lead trailing. The vet frowns. Hmmm, I think. Otter pauses at the door of the consulting room, so I stop and go to her quietly, reassuring and waiting for her. If she doesn't want to go in, that's OK I am not making her, or coercing her through the door. Mentally though I note not to have the same vet again. Otter then bounds in happily. The vet then comments that I really shouldn't have her on the floor, and starts to talk about....blah...blah..blah....(at this point my inner ninja is desperate to get out...) I glance at the floor and ask if it was cleaned this morning? She looks at me, sighs and asks if I could pop her on the table. I push my inner ninja back down and up goes Otter on the table. The rest of the consultation was OK, Otter didn't mind the injection, but wasn't too enamoured with the vet. S'Ok more visits needed I think. Interestingly though I did pick up the "perception" around her temperament based on colour. This came out when Otter wasn't too thrilled with the treats the vet scattered on the table (she got a mental gold star at least for that...) BUT Otter wasn't overly keen on them. Dogs really shouldn't be judged on colour. I agreed that her FUR was chocolate...and left it at that. hmmmph!!!!

Back home, and yippeee! Her bed was there so back she goes happy as a lark! :dug:

Mostly a quiet day, just wandering around the garden, playing. I let a couple of chooks out in the garden. My thinking was the earlier I introduce Otter, in a calm manner the better. Whilst I did introduce Bramble as a youngish puppy, she was certainly older than Otter.

But...doncha just love Benson :inlove::inlove:

Benson looks rather nonplussed by those pesky chooks - can't say I blame him :cwl:

Bramble, on the other hand, looks like she's waiting for a cue to go and grab one :devil:

Vets - dear me. I remember one telling me that I was going to have problems with Luna because "she was already being naughty" at about 12 weeks when having eye drops put in. Errr - she was scared. But, yes, you're right, she's turning her head away because she's chocolate. Sigh.

Otter looks so sweet - butter wouldn't melt :D

Benson is an angel! (And reminds me of my dear Rolo who was also completely calm around chickens. Molly would commit murder!) Otter is having such a great upbringing.
