Pickle and storm Dennis

We sat watching tv last night with all the dogs, they all went out for a last pee before bed but then Pickle was most unhappy. We have the two older dogs sleeping in the utility room but Pickle sleeps by herself in the conservatory. Our house is on the top of a hill and it was truly wild here last night, doors were banging and things were blowing around the garden.

Pickle managed to get into the kitchen and then bolted upstairs and got on our bed. We don’t let the dogs upstairs so this was very strange behaviour! Mr P took her bed upstairs and tried to persuade her to sleep in the corner of the bedroom but she just pretended that she couldn’t hear him and tucked herself into the coverlet. She slept quietly on our bed until Mr P got up at 4 to go to the bathroom. He picked her up and put her on her bed but 10 seconds after he turned the light out she leapt back to her previous place. She stayed without moving on our bed until 8 this morning when she went to the door and squeaked to be let out. She was fed and let out this morning without any attempt to go back upstairs.

I think that she was trying to tell us that she was very frightened, I wore her for the first few weeks as a puppy but she has always been quite independent subsequently.
Will wait and see how she behaves tonight...

Poor Pickle, it has been pretty scary at times. At least she was unable to get some comfort being with you!

Aww bless , frightened and needed comfort . I think Nelly would be the same but as a deaf dog she doesnt hear adverse weather x

I think it’s wonderful that she turned to you for comfort, rather than, say, chewing up her bed or any number of destructive things. Lovely that she sees you as her guardians.

Well, she went to bed in the conservatory happily last night so it just must have been the storm that frightened her. I’m so fascinated that she wasn’t showing any obvious signs of distress, lip licking, yawning etc but was just so very determined that she needed to sleep with us.

I think it really helps if you don’t think of your dogs as naughty or deliberately disobedient as it gives you more or a chance to think about what is driving their behaviour.

I totally agree. If Red’s behaviour is different, there is always a good reason. It pays to observe her
